SR5 existed before the S or VE...think back to the era of the AE92 and earlier. it's basically a notch below the Corolla GTS.

i used to drive an 1989 sr5. it WAS an AE92 chasis, and the motor was a carburated 4af. 2 door. gas milage on it sucked. and there are very few bolt on mods for it. back in the day, i was trying to get the head ported, with a better carburator. it cost way too much money. you CAN, get ITB for that motor... but hella expensive.

SR5 (in corolla) is basically a poor man's GTS. In the old day, you only bought a SR5 when you loved the look of a GTS but too poor to pay for it.
It's similar to S and XRS today.
