So one day I'm driving along, and I lit my boot on fire.

Yeah one day I was driving my '86 Corolla GTS (AE86), it was a pretty cool day and I had a really bad exhaust leak from the head pipe. Well I'm driving along and I start to smell something burning... hmmm, that's odd. I turn to Niki (my wife) and I'm like, hey, do you smell something burning? And she's like, yeah.

About this same time I start to notice that my right foot is feeling kinda warm... so I pull my foot off the gas pedal and pick it up, and the rubber of my boot is literally DRIPPING off, and there's smoke coming from the carpet! So I pull over real quick and check it out.

Turns out that the exhaust head pipe blew a 1" by 1" hole right in the top of it facing the floorboard, and the heat was coming out and nuking the floorboard. So I pull over at the next exit, I'm about 45 minutes from home on the interstate. I stop at a gas station and pick up a roll of tinfoil and some duct tape. So I get under there and wrap it real good with tinfoil, and then duct tape it real good. Get back on the highway.

The car sounds a lot quieter too, so I'm psyced. We're driving along, and all of a sudden I see a flash in my rearview mirror. I look back and I see peices of tinfoil flying all over the road! HAHA! And right away the car gets really loud again. So I'm like, well, so much for that.

So for the rest of the drive home I alternate stepping on the gas to get up to speed and then coasting so that I don't light the car on fire. But I made it, and for all I know, that old AE86 is still rolling around today.


This happened about 3 years ago now. I have no idea what inspired me to write about it, it just popped into my head and I thought I'd share it.
