It's a stupid comment. Why would you feel the need to stir the pot by bringing this up? Knowing you, you probably agree with it. Before African Americans can "get over it," those who profited from slave labor will have to pay back those profits, as well as the profits from all subsequent businesses their slave money allowed them to start. That would mean Sotheby's, just about all investment banks, and Coca-Coca among others, should hand over all the profits they have made in the lifetime of their business.

    Sounds insane, right?

That's how the comment of "get over it" sounds to me.

Stir the pot? Its a prominant news story right now. If you want to be a jackass about it.....dont reply here. Have you forgotten that this is the debate section? If you cant be mature about this topic, dont reply.
I could easily say..."well, knowing you, you WOULD be against it."

No, it doesnt sound insane. It SOUNDS SILLY. So money will make you feel different about it? So all of these companies cut you a check for your relatives (if in fact you even had relatives that were enslaved) hard work, and that check somehow will make it all okay? How fucked up is THAT?

And Im sure that YOU feel that you should get some of those profits, correct? THAT is what I dont agree with. That there are African Americans out there that feel that THEY personally should be compensated...youre in your 20s, and this happened 150 years ago. Were your relatives in the slave trade?

How much money would it take? (Greed) How much time would it take? 200 years? 400 years? 600 years?

I guess we should all start paying back the Native Americans then as well.

Oh, and please explain to me how Coca Cola should be paying back descendants?

I think it is time to get over it. By dragging it out it has ensured that 'not all men are created equal' is a socially accepted viewpoint. Playing the race card every time something doesn't go your way shouldn't force others/employers/legislators to roll over and give you whatever you want. Each person should have to equally earn the right to a high paying job, or a promotion, or a school scholarship.

Well I mean yes it was harsh and what not but that was quite sometime ago, racism still exists but blacks are free and stuff so I see no reason why they should still keep a grudge about it.

I agree with both of those replies.

In no way do I think slavery is EVER acceptable, but to demand compensation for it 150 years later is too much.

I personally think the entire issue should be dropped...
namely because african-americans would love to make this all about a white vs black issue when it is not at all... blacks were just as guilty during the era as well. yes, there were black slave masters, not just only white ones. and guess what? that black slave owners did it for the same reasons, to increase profits. slavery was not a new issue and was not practiced soley in the americas either... slavery was a worldwide past time and most of europe seems to have gotten over it so why can't we? it's nothing but a bunch of boo-hooing and whining to make a lot of noise and get attention, plain and simple. get the fuck over it.

it's widely known that slaves had it a lot easier here in the colonies than they had it in africa, but no one recognizes that. also, a good chunk of the people who were used as slaves in the americas were handed over to the slave traders BY THEIR OWN FAMILIES! so... get over it? i think so. let's also keep a good note on the fact that only about 1-2% of whites in the americas actually owned slaves, it wasnt the population as a whole that practiced the use of slave labor. Also, post civil war, go and look up how many slaves *STAYED* with their masters to help them rebuild despite being freed because they were treated very well. history from some perspectives likes to point out and make big deals out of all the negative points of slavery, but thats not how things were.

i'm not racist, i'm not a supporter of slavery, but what was going on at the time was considered acceptable by many in that day - end of story. things have changed, just like they have all over the world and we must accept that the present is the present and stop living in the past to try to wrangle something for nothing.

Let's not forget that slavery was not just restriced to just Africa and oroginal colonies - slavery was practed for centuries before in the middle easy and in Asia. Some of which are still going on today in some isolated areas - I don't see anyone over there complaining about it or demanding reparations.

I dont think its just only a grudge against slavery but also against civil rights which didnt happen too long ago and some people that were pushing for civil rights are still alive today. Its more of a racism + slavery issue. Lets face it racism still exists around us today. Until the majority of racism is gone (which I doubt will ever happen) these issues will always come up until the world has cross-bred enough so that everyone is one color, beige.

the problem is the racism of today is not unidirectional, its bidirectional and *that* is a huge problem. unfortunately so many of the so-called civil rights figures of today seem to enjoy the sound of their own voice more than they do the message they are trying to deliver. i really wish MLK was still alive to see how twisted the movement he started has become. I bet he's rolling over in his grave for sure.

Well I guess if we pay everything back that any slave owner ever made, then that would set a precidence for the Jews (Jedean Line Not Jewish people today) would be able to sue Every Egyptian for money from the Moses days. lol

Sorry. I think it should go away. Slavery happened too long agao and money is not going to fix anything. People who have a grudge will have it whether or not their financial situation changes. Its how they choose to view life situations. My hope is that it dies with them. Unfortunatley, Some people views even unhaealthy ones get transfered to young impressionable minds. :meh:

It doesnt happen anymore and what was in the past should remain. They have the same freedoms as you and me now. The one thing I hate is when blacks use their skin color in defense if they dont have their way. Veering off topic a tad, black have been here longer than asians. Yet, they continue to live in poverty and take advantage of easy money. Asians come here starting with nothing pretty much. Although asians make up only about 4-5% of the american population, they show the greatest economic growth amongst other races (this includes whites). Also, asians have the highest "person to income" ratio amongst all other races (also including whites). It holds true cuz if you think about it, how many poor asian people do you see out in the world. When you think of an asian in terms of knowledge and occupation, you associate them with being smart in math and science, and are usually in successful professions, such as doctors, etc...and how many asian people on this forum have parents that always pester them to "do your best" and throw a wild fit if you bring home a report card with a "B" on it, lol.

ninety four? just a wild guess there..lol.

you can't really compare the 2 because there are some blacks out there that try hard and just can't do it. For whatever reason it is. This is a whole different topic but just because there are more blacks that live in poverty, you can't say that they all don't try when in reality some really do. And just like there are asian parents who pester their kids, I'm sure there are black parents who do the same although they live in poverty.

you should really be more specific and refer to asians in the US alone. because there are MILLIONS of poor asians, uneducated asians, asian thieves, asian gangs, etc. if i recall there are more asians then any other race on this planet. im just pointing that out and playing a little devils advocate so dont take it personal.

my thoughts on blacks getting over themselves and things that had nothing to do with them? please, get over it. if black people should be upset about anyone it should be other blacks that didnt "sell them down the river" but literally sold them in bulk across the oceans. they should be upset with egyptians for enslaving their people for centuries. and the pride for the "motherland" but lack of maybe... going back? i smell freeloader in the majority of the population. also there should be no such thing as "african american" "asian american" "mexican american" because you arent any of those... you are an AMERICAN! celebrate your histary all you want, please im all for that. but have a little pride and call yourself and american, speak the language, and live the life that only this country can afford you.

    more later

Hehe, its cool man. They make up like 5% of the american population. Out of that 5% is where the statistics are coming from. I'm just comparing the races already in the US who are also just as capable here in America as other races here as well. I remembered those statistics from a read-up I did on the census for government class cuz I kept looking at asian populations in different cities, lol. For the most part, the average asian population made more of a mean average income than most other races in that particular area. I thought that it was pretty interesting.

I agree. I mean, its not like history is going to forget slavery. I just don't think people should be benefiting from somethng 150 years on. Thats a lot of time for a family to work on its disposition.

Anyhow, will there be such a thing as a minority in the coming decades?
