    skid turning

anyone here do it a lot?

i'm no auto-x'er or anything and i've always been scared of fast wide turns until recently.. the sound of tires skidding kind of scared me a lil.

when there arent any cars around at night, at the same turns that i'm familiar with, i like to do skid turns now.....

    its kinda fun.

skid turn? is that like a tail slide?

if that's what you mean I've done it a few times but only to recover from understeer conditions in a turn. saved me a few gutterballs if you know what I mean.

I had to switch my wheels out for the winter....so I put away my Rota GT3s on Nitto Neogen tires because they were a summer tire. They were such a sticky ass tire that I could corner anything like no other day. But I switched those out for my factory wheels and tires to winterize my car. The first time I took it out after that, I realized how well those Nitto's really worked for me. Now with these oem tires, I can make my tires screech in turns without even trying, lol...

well i just call it a skid turn because the tires are i guess being pushed to their grip limit... no sliding lol i'd be scared of that..

i guess its somewhat like how grip racers would turn... brake first turn and open throttle

ok so you're just talking about getting the tires to the edge of their grip but not actual slides to steer the vehicle.

dont worry about that for autoX, it's pretty low speed. And you dont know your cars limit until you spin out, the autoX course is the best place to do it if you dont mind other ppls picking up your cones.

roflmao.... I (or my tires) always do this because they are so thin.... stupid 13's.... when im entering the freeway with the "go around (like 180degree turn)" entry's rated at 30mph, I always do less because at 30mph front tires would screech and I would be scared to blow them off....

Warning - be careful when pushing your car. I've owned my corolla for a few years now and i still didnt feel i could control it perfectly. but compared to many others out there, I would say i was above average. I even used to try to slide the car just for fun. BUT!!! the problem with 98-02 corollas is the fact that the rear end is very very light. Last week, While on the on-ramp getting on the highway, my car's rear end slid. it swayed back and forth twice but i was used to it so i had control. or so i thought. With that year car, once you go beyond a certain angle, its really really really hard to keep control. my car exceeded the angle i was used to and while i was hoping to just slow down and stop, my car decided to snap and do a 360 and afterwards was hit by a semi-truck when my car slid into the next lane. So yeah, be careful. :)

just out of curiosity, for the auto-x'ers here:

if drunksaru would have turned the wheel towards the direction of the rear's sliding, and applied enough acceleration, would he have been able to correct his slide?

just something to keep in mind in case it happens to me.

Yep, that should prevent you from doing a 360

depends. if the angle was still low enough it could have been corrected. but I've gotten caught in a situation where the steering does nothing and my best bet was to grab the ebrake and purposely make the back end slide to do a 180. Mind you this happened with nobody around and a wide enough road for it to work. otherwise I'd have been in a ditch pretty quick.
