I think is a good deal for the price and the cool display. Also I remember seeing those selling for over $400.00 at the store(correct me if I'm wrong). Remember if you like it that's all it counts.

I'm searching reviews on the web to see how's Panasonic in in-dash receivers. I never saw some before.

I'm actually using a Aiwa CDCMP3 and I don't really like it, so I might be interessed, the price your talking are CAD or USD ? Is the radio comming from the US ? I'm really use to send/receive goods from the US and you always have to think of Custom taxes and Taxes (fed. & pro.)...

I have the Panasonic CQ-DP171U installed on my CE and I am quite happy with it.
I had it installed on my former car and then transferred it to the 'rolla.

This deck was Panasonic's first MP3 unit and it was launched in August 2001. It has a rather plain display (it is an LCD by the way, sans graphics) and aside from the MP3 badge it is identical cosmetically to other 2001 Panasonics.

The sound is great, has lots of power, 45 watts per side @ 10% Total Harmonic Distortion. This gives it great punch even with the stock speakers. I would say it sounds twice as powerful as the stock CD player.

I had to buy the DIN adapter to have it fit the dashboard (See pic) but the installation was a snap. It even included the toyota wiring adapter harness.

It does benefit from higher quality CD-Rs. With the really cheap "bulk" types it can occassionally make funny sounds with certain MP3 files. It also doesn't like VBR (variable bit rate) encoded files. It works perfectly with CBR files encoded at 192 kbps or higher. I use the FHg encoder. I found the Maxell brand works particularly well.

I also burn my CD-Rs using the ROMEO filing scheme for longer filenames. Up to 30 characters on the Panasonic's display. The unit also displays CD Text on regular audio CD that have this feature encoded. Of course, you can burn your own CDs with CD Text using NERO or other similar software.

Once you have this unit installed, you'll be amazed on how good the stock speakers really are. Specially compared to stock speakers on older Toyotas. They do have a somewhat recessed high end. What I do is peak the treble on the Panasonic for that added brilliance. I don't miss the little tweeters on the fancier 'rollas. :)

Ilumination is ok. It can be dim on a sunny day. It is does not dim automatically when the lights are on tho.

I would say go for it, if you find one at a good price. I bought mine exactly a year ago, when it was being phased out for the 2002 models. I paid $200. The best investment in audio I have made. Well worth it. Gives me lots of entertainment on long commutes. Rarely have to switch CDs. Cool!

    Regards
