    Short shifter question

I just ordered a TWM short shifter. I always heard that it was one of the most crucial upgrades you could do on a manual transmission. I know a bunch of you guys have them on your cars. Do you agree with that? Noticable difference? I'm just impatient and can't wait to see how it rides.

I cut 3" off my shifter to make it even shorter then the TWM and I love it :) It does make the shifts a little bit harder but they feel way more crisp and close togather.

I think its a pretty crucial upgrade that I've been meaning to get myself. I've driven friend's cars that have them and you can tell the difference.

Height plays a factor, but I think the "short" in short shifter mainly refers to the decreased amount of time and distance needed to change gears. My brother bought a new Accord last night and while we were at the dealer I got a chance to sit in the new Civic. I noticed its tranny has a really smooth action and you can feel how short the distance between the gears is compared to my Corolla's stock shifter.

So I guess cutting the height of the stock shifter may help, but a real quick/short shifter has a different pivot point to make the shifts take less time.

^^ true. I agree completely, a "short shifter" should be more correctly refer to as a "short throw shifter." The pivot point play a bigger role than the length when it come to the functionality of a SS

Thats true but our shifters are really long, Cutting 3 inches off shorted the throw by almost %50. And I also started out with a TRD short shifter which raised the pivot point a little so the effect was amplified. But at any rate try cutting down a shifter sometime 3" and you'll notice an insane difference.

I agree, but I did start off with a TRD short shifter which already had the longest possible pivot point the 01' Corolla could handle without bottoming out on the car. If I wanted more of a pivot I would have to put washers in as spacers on the whole assembly and cut out the top of the center console to raise the pivot point anymore. Hey thats an idea :) But right now my shifts are as short as I can stand them. From 1st to 2nd I move the top of the shifter maybe 1 - 1 1/2 inch. and before it was like 2 1/2 - 3inch. So it was way dramatic.

That would be pretty cool to go with some 2" bushing to raise the shift assembly and modify the center column, would give the car a more Supra like feeling, sunk in.

You could always lower your seat.

You removed 3 inches from the factory shifter...J/C How is your knob attached?

I'm going to assume you cut it off the top and cut new threads into the top of the shifter for the knob.

Not really, I have an inverter under my seat and a stereo amp under the passenger side seat and I made custom brakets already and I don't want to modify them again ;)

i believe he cut a 3" portion out of the middle of the shifter somewhere and welded the two pieces back together.

Whats exactly what I did. I'll have to post a picture of my shifter now but the knob is about 1 inch above the hold in the shoud :) Its very short!
