    same engine different HP

how is it that the 1zz in the corolla makes 130 but in the Mr2 and the Celica it makes 140?

and the 2zz in the GTS makes 180, but the Xrs makes 170?

is there some "secret" to getting that easy 10+ horsepower, or is there something really obvious that im missing

It's through the ECU tuning, basically the Celica and MR2 run the engine for performance and the Corolla runs it for economy. You can swap the Celica ECU in.

you cant be concerned with gas milage if you are looking for performance.

The Celica also has a different intake manifold.

    :laughcry:

Swapping it is doable, but it doesn't just plug in. You'll have to rewire it.

the new corolla is heavy as fuk so toyota tuned the corolla ecu to have a higher torque band. Meanwhile Lotus tuned their ecu to run 190hp on the Elise.

Hey doc, can you make us some adaptor or something like that for our 1ZZ rolla using the Celica GT ECU? :p
I heard that we can directly plug the auto Celica GT ECU to the auto 00-02 (dunno about 03), but will lose the reverse.

u might just need reverse, lmao

but, so if the lotus gets even more HP then why not just use the lotus ecu...

Because the Lotus uses the 2ZZ-GE, not the 1ZZ-FE :)

Also concerning the 2ZZ-GE, if i'm not mistaken, the Lotus gets the higher hp number at the sacrifice of it's torque curve, which is fine in a car as light as the Elise, but in the Corolla and Celica that weigh about 400~500lbs more, you need the torque...

The big talks for the 2zz are on 9thgencorolla.com under 2zz area. The loss is to gain some torque curve, however JCTurbo who is working on master tech for us XRS's, to lower lift to 5500rpm and tune the VVT to get more hp. JCTurbo also has a theory where the 10hp went to, but he is wanting to do more research to find out, so people dont f**k up their cars trying his theory.

There is a 04 Matrix XRS with the camcom controller hooked up to tune VVT on the engine, with intake and exhaust he went from 174whp to 185whp with tuning the VVT.

And for the 1zz, there is a different intake manifold, you can talk to Vamp about that, he has already done the switch to the celica on his car. And whoever mentioned the ECU swap change for years and stuff, as far as i know you are correct about that.

lotus has some weak torque, but then again, it's super light, so it still moves like a go-cart on roids

the lotus sucks on on torque. it like driving a S200 with absolutely no torque literally. I test drove one on San Antonio and it sucks on launch. but after that it picks up lighting quick. I on the other hand am not concerned about power on mine since it makes enough already but with the additonal weight on it, it runs very slow. if i take all that off it runs like hell.but if i could get a different setup that would be great.

If the tires were spinning, all the power in the world wouldn't help.. ;)

I imagine it's quite a kick in the pants when lift engages..?

    Uhhh no it doesn't...different ECU.

The lotus has 190 because ECU and headers coming off along with exhaust. More aggressive intake timing.

it peeled out for a very short time until the Stability, and Traction Control Systems Turned on i for got to turn them off. it caught on pretty quickly but the car has very low torque and high end HP but that is it.

intake timing is slowed to 10 degrees lower than that of the regular 2zz engine. which is why it also has a higher oil pressure system ECU is very different and Lotus and Toyota have a setup that is no where near close to the other engines. and header wise they are not that much bigger in diameter but the design allows for more efficient flow.

    1) Yes it does. Re-read the thread -- we weren't talking about the Lotus when I posted that.
    2) There's no 's' in header.

header = 1 exhaust or opening to the exhaust port of an engine
headers= Various number of openings to the ehxaust ports to the engine.

If you n00bs can't figure out whether to say "header" or "headers", just say "exhaust manifold" and call it a day.
