If you have a lot of miles the internal clutch could be getting worn out.. or the transmission 'bands' have become misaligned. autos always sorta have a little of a thump because you typically shift at low speed or a stop and the clutch doesn't really blend or rev-match.

    that reminds me...

in my last car that was an auto I tried shifting from neutral into drive after a long hill descent @ 70mph.. you not only got a thump, but the revs would jump up by atleast 1000 from being engaged so harshly.

Check your engine mounts and transmission mounts cause when they're out it cause the powertrain to move abruptly when shifting.

when I said it shifted rough from 1 to 2 it's the transmission itslef ^^; I don't touch that stick much at all

so... clutch? o_O the engine has 98K miles and I suppose the transmission also....

how much would it be in pieces basically?

I want it running like a clock :p I hate those THUMPS! and a lil shaking of the engine to compensate for the lost rpms

quite a bit. my 98 did the same and it turned out it was one of the rear engine mounts and one tranny mount. then it stopped. your torque converter, internal bands, may on thier last "stretch". BTW when was the last time you changed your tranny fluid?

ya just do a proper transmission flush and check your mounts and that should help out your problem. When my mounts were bad I felt the powertrain move when I shifted to R or to D.

I changed them when I got the car... so I suppose it was the first the car had since new cause it smelled like pureed soiled pampers

on the other half... I'll look in to the mounts then... I know shit of that so don't expect pro details... other than, they look ok and they look rotted out

do they looked cracked? in between the metal meets the rubber? if they are then they are messed up if not they are still good. Put your car in park and on a flat surface if possible. rock your car gently back and forth and pay close attention to the mounts if you can (if possible have someone rock the car while you look or vice versa) you should be avle to notice if there is a space or gap when moving. if there is then they are possibly bad.. if it smelled that bad then it was about time you changed it your suppose to service 15K to 30 K intervals depending on driving and weather conditons.

just have your motor mounts checked out since it is very rare when an automatic tranny give out on a 98+ toyota.
