Can anyone solve this?

Many a people have handled me;
aside from those in delivery;
guard me from the wet;
and save me from the fire;

Zealous folk can damage me;
inside and outside I can go;
nowadays I can even fly;
even you can come to me;

I can be thick;
not always short;

For many a day you have passed me by;
only regarded by a few;
you have seen me;
every day there are people who need me;
ready for the answer my friend?

damn those are hard... i got one...

im light as air, and cannot be seen at all
but no man can hold me for a long time
what am i?
