    Return of bulbs thread

If you hadn't noticed i like the look of HIDs but then again i am 17 so real ones are out of the question. In the last bulb thread i made i posted a link to hyperwhite bulbs that only had a color temp of 3500K, far from HID so i scratched that idea. Luckily sound domain now has new bulbs found here. I saw these have a color temp of 4800K and are still legal. Now those being the lowbeams consuming the 55w which the stock harness should support.
From reading the other thread, modifing a 9005 bulb seen here wouldn't be too difficult and I would have a brighter low beam. The only problem is that they draw 65w which is 10w over what the manual says. Would this be safe, or would i be looking at burning out the wires or bulbs. I plan on buying both high and low beams regardless of this since they are such a reasonable price. I don't want to buy a new wire harness so answer truthfully, should i buy 9005 bulbs and modify them to fit in the low beams and get another set for the highs, or should i play it safe and buy the 9006 bulbs for the low beams and 9005 for the high beams. I am content with either option not being savvy in this area.

I ran 110 watt bulbs on the stock harness for about 1 month before it blew. So its not an instant effect. I would "guess" that only being 10 watts over will be fine. But for the cost of making your own kit its not really worth it to risk. You can make your own for about $15. But I dont have time to explain how to do it. If you know how a relay works you should be able to figure it out.

Also, I personally would not waste my time with the lower wattage bulbs. I dont have any good thigns to say about eurolite in the firts place. But I find the lower wattage bulbs that have higher color rating get that rating from just coloring the glass more. So your actual usable light will be reduced, or on par with stock. If its lighting effects you are after, you need to go with more power. Lumens actually is what you are after, but with the higher wattage usually comes more lumens.

If you just want looks, then get the 55w stock rated bulbs and be happy.

You'll be fine for a while but after a period of time your headlights housing is gonna start melting.. you can see the inside where the top of the reflector is gonna be all melted. I had some Regular Piaas and it was still melting.. i dont know about modifying them.. it should be more hot.. so im guessing that its gonna do the same thing.

Hmm, 3 different answers, now what do i do... I don't know how to make my own kit, and i dont know what relays do or how they work. So what i am hearing is that the 65w 9005 bulbs will work in 9006 place, but melt the housing.

I dont know what crazyness is saying about stuff melting.

With my 150W 9005 bulbs running in the 9006 spot I have not seen any signs of anything melting. You will be fine with the high beam convertion for your low beams. Just know that I am not sure how strong the toyota relay system is, and that I did burn mine out before. SO if it does burn out using the 60w bulbs dont blame me.

..........But you should be ok.

    Hmmm....

"Oh, you kids and your brights in the dim sockets!!!"

Holy cow, have you ever turned your lights on and put your hands out in front of them? (Do this in your driveway or parking lot, not while you're driving!!!)

I've got Silverstars in my Corolla -- yes, just ordinary Silverstar "dims" in the dims, and "brights" in the brights -- how boring! Yet, turn on those brights, get out of the car, and feel that heat!!! I wouldn't even DARE run anything that hot on a continual basis -- it would scare the holy crap out of me! I really, truly find it hard to believe that just an ordinary Silverstar bright wouldn't wind up melting the headlight covers over time. Scary stuff, as headlight assemblies ain't cheap!!

Anyway. So tell me guys, just what the heck do you need so much light for?? You guys driving rally races on the dirt roads at night??

Hehehe. I say most of this "tongue in cheek," but if you haven't, do indeed stick your hand out in front of your "brights" (whichever socket you may have them in), and see what kind of heat you're generating. And, you might give some thought about "actually driving on roads with other drivers" -- I'm not so sure I'd want to be coming the other way against you! Let me just say that I did quite a bit of night driving during my trip to Las Vegas and Phoenix a couple of months ago -- driving after midnight on two-lane highways, mixing it up with the other drivers on the road, etc. I had Silverstars in the "dims," but I hadn't sprung for the "brights" yet -- I didn't think I'd be doing any "night driving." But, the Silverstars truly did an excellent job lighting up the road, and even the stock brights were also excellent when I used them. I felt very comfortable with all of the light, and the generally higher seating position than I've had in other cars. "Truly excellent visibility" is how I'd call it.

So, please forgive me for not comprehending this desire to melt wiring and headlight covers and all that stuff -- guess I'm just an old fart....

    Carry on!

    Thoots,

You have good points. Let me expolain my situation.

I have dissabled the DRL's so that the lows are not on except at night. I am going to wire my fogs to be my DRL's and my city lights at night. But in the winter I go night snowboarding 2 or 3 times a week. So I end up driving down dark non lit roads with only my lights to show me the way. They come in handy in that situation.

    stinky,

Hehehe. Yeah, it goes without saying that you wouldn't want those high-beamers running all day long as DRL's! :p Sounds like a plan!

:p OK, I'll take that as "close enough" to running rally races on the dirt roads at night! :p

Just to help justify that rally claim, I do drive pretty agressive oin the way up. I will sometimes get the Ebrake into it to give the rally drifiting effect.

I was thinking of mounting thos ebig huge round lights on the bumper for that purpose as well.

I modofied some walmart 9005 'Super Blues' (i think there just made by GE)and stuck them in the low beam socket, only had them in for a month but i havent noticed any melting in the wire or the light housing. You can definately notice the diffrence between stock bulbs and the modified 9005 super blues when you put both in and compare them side to side, stock has a nice yellow hue and the cheap walmarts make it pretty white, but im sure theres more room to be whiter, but im happy with them for now. I dont feel like spending that much money on lighting. Rather put the money into the engine and kick all the ricers asses with there fancy expensive light blubs, if you know what i mean
