    Replacing the tweeter speakers

I've looked through the forum and found out the ways to replace the head unit, front speakers, and rear speakers; but didn't find the way to replace the tweeter speakers. Does anyone know how? I can't even figure out how to take the over off. Feel like it might break...

What do you want to replace the tweeters with? They're not exactly a standard size.

Oh, no. I didn’t even think about it being non-standard size... I have Infinity Kappa 10.2T, which has 1 inch diameter. Do you have any suggestion?

I have a CE, so mine didn't come with tweeters. I mounted Infinity Reference tweeters (same size as yours) like this:

If I were you I would buy new trim pieces from the dealer and mount your new tweeters in those. I checked with dealer before cutting mine - they are $25 Canadian each ~ $17 US.

Thank you for the information. Your tweeters are mounted so clean. I'll try to install mine inside the original cover first. If nothing works, then I'll do it your way. Good thing about your way is I'll be able to see the tweeters, but I'll try spend less money first.

    oxymoron??

can you explain how you did the tweeters?

did yu use the factory wires? How do they sound? do they over power the door speakers? Thanks

I just cut holes in the trim and stuck the tweeters in. On the backside there is a generous coating of silicon to hold it in place. The mounting hardware that came with the tweeters just wasn't going to work.

I have a CE - there was no factory wiring so I put my own in. I installed Infinity component speakers. The bass/mid driver is a 6.5 inch driver mounted in a home made MDFadapter. The crossover is mounted on the inside of the door trim as close to the hinge as I could get it.

I also replaced the rear speakers. I would say that the fronts overpower the rears, but I still haven't quite finished setting up the system. I'm still trying to get hold of a spectrum analyser for a weekend.

OXY It appears that the angle of the tweets is adjustable. Is that correct?

OFF TOPIC Judging by Ms Lara Jean's very attractive picture, I'll take bets that OXY will do it for free.......any takers?

    TWEETER INSTALLATION

Oxy - did u use a hole saw to cut the tweeter? Is the plastic easy to get thru? how did u decide where to cut thru? Did u use the regular factory wires or upgrade? Thanks.

I traced the hole I wanted to cut on the piece and then drilled holes all around the inside of the hole with a small bit - probably 30 or 40 holes. Then I cut between the holes with a modeling knife and filed around the edges until the tweeters fit really snug. I didn't have enough room to use the mounting hardware that came with the tweeters, so I used every insatller's best friend - silicon. Sounds like a lot of work, but it only took about 10 minutes each. The material is thermoplastic, so it's really soft. As for placement, I basically centered the tweeter. I had to modify the brakets that came with them to avoid interference, but that wasn't too hard. There's more space behind there than you might think.

I had to install wiring for them - there was no factory wiring. I've got a crossover mounted on the inside of the door panels.

    Oxy

Oxy - nice work! looks great! How does it sound? Do the tweeters overpower the door speakers? I have a CE and I put Boston Acoustic 6.5" in the doors with the same mdf template as you. Then I put 6x9 BA speakers in the rear deck. I missed the tweeters? I should have bougt compnent speakers as you did that have a crossover to control the tweeter. I used a Eclipse H/U but my system just dosn't sound that great for the $500 investment? I might try a 5channel amp with sub to round things out?

I've Component speakers in the front : 6.5' (Infinity Kappa) in the doors and small tweeters (audiobahn) located at the same place as Oxy but I didn't made a flush mounting, I'll try to make pictures this week-end. I also changed my rear 6x9 with some Pioneer speakers.

For your installation, yes, you're missing the tweeters with a good crossover. But I think if you don't add an amp to your system the sound won't be really good. The HU are usually driving 20 RMS Watts (or less) to your speakers, with an amp you can easily go to 70-80 RMS Watts, that's the BIG difference.

When I did the installation I've putted Dynamat everywhere into the front doors and also everywhere on the rear deak. I think it's a must!!

The only solution to have a good sound is to have an amp! I've installed a 600W 4-channel amp in the trunk and re-wirred everything... Sounds great!!!! Now I just need a new HU (I don't like my Aiwa) and another Amp with a sub :D

Walt - when you look for a head unit check out Eclipse. The CD reproduction on there H/U is incredible. My system does not sound right yet but I know the head unit is not the problem. when i rework it i will start with an amp, tweeters, and possibly different speakers. Thanks for te input.

Tweeters up front really do help to bring the sound stage forward. They don't overpower the door speakers at all, but then mine are matched to the door speakers. If you're going to put in a sub then tweeters are a must, otherwise you'll have a muddy sounding system.

OK, I got the cover off, i noticed that there are 2 screws holding the tweeter in place(circled in red in the pic below), is that right? I lent my toolkit to a friend so i couldn't try opening it up. Oh and also how do u get the door panel off? i'll need to put the crossover somewhere. thanx for the help

    Heres step by step

Here is how you do it.

1.The First Screw is easy to get 2 you just use a small flat head screw driver and pop the little flap out

    2. Remove the second part you need to start from the right side and use a flat head screw driver and push up slowly and jsut slowly work side to side lifting it out be carefull not 2 break the brackerts takes a little 2 get out

3.The third part 2 take out I will explain in a sec.

After you take the first part off you will see the 2 last screws but guess what you dont want 2 take them out yet.

OK for the third part you start at the right with the flat head screw driver this part will only come out one way top first as shown below then you need 2 un hook the plug for the windows if you have it its a little tricky but you should be able to get it.

Now that you have that out you can start at the bottom of the door working up with the flat head screw driver be careful I do this alot so I am used 2 it After you get it the first time you will get it with no problem when you get it all undone the door panel comes out a little and then you lift up and you are done.
