    Redline on a 8th gen

I was rolling along in my 98 corolla today, and i decided to see how the first gear would handle. So i accelerated up to about 45, and obviously the engine was approaching redline. Then at 45, the engine jumped 3-4 times, like a twitching noise. Sounded like the engine was revving down to protect it from going too high in the redline. I was just wondering if this was a safety precaution the ECU did, or it was just the engine getting to redline and can't do anything high except revving down. Will it hurt my engine? It seemed fine a few minutes later, but I was wondering if there are any long term effects. thanks

The limiter you hit was a fuel cut. Thats not a good thing, you were running your engine lean for those few revs. It was said earlier any abuse is not a good thing, so take that easy!

i've bounced off the rev limiter numerous times.. and from what i've been told, it's not a fuel cut. it's an ignition cut..

I agree it is meant to help protect it, it's not meant to continually bounce off of it. I know the guy said he acidentally hit so no big deal, just wanted him to know he doesn't want to keep doing it.

the rev limiter is there to PROTECT the engine.. so :) no worries..

nothing sounds quite like an S2000 with catback, in 2nd gear wrapping it out into the rev limiter.. got to hear that a bit this weekend at homestead.

I neer heared mine until I got my TRD exhaust. When on idle and I rev it, it hits the rev limitter and you can hear it popping. Anyways can you over rev an auto while on drive?

you think the rev limiter is rough... try hitting the speed limiter... im not one to usually go that fast but i was late... on the turnpike and a dude in a corvette was makeing a good pace. i tried to keep up but a corvette can go much faster than 114 so i nailed that speed limiter... felt like a cylinder droped off for a second. scared me

there's a speed limiter? i've been over 110 on mine, don't know how much, but i let go and it would be a second before the speedometer would drop. what does the speedlimiter try to protect? :p

you from killing yourself. there's a reason stock tires are rated to 110...go any faster and you're rsking their integrity.

Speed limiter is set to match the maximum speed of whatever speed rated tires come on the vehicle stock. My 03 came with Goodyear Integras which are T speed rated (112mph). Hence the 112mph speed limiter. It's a strange feeling to have the gas pedal pegged and all of a sudden, the car starts slowing down, eh?

The redline and fuel cut are at the SAME rpm, just FYI. And it is fuel cut. The ECU kills the injectors for a cycle until revs drop below the danger zone. It does create a lean mixture, but no worries. THAT lean of a mixture won't even fire at all...it's just residual fuel from the last combustion cycle. Not enough to cause detonation, which is the real killer of a lean mix.

hmmm....I think Apexi makes some kind of piggyback unit that will remove the speed limiter. PowerFC or something like that....not sure.
