Is it a rattle or a squeak? I have a minor squeak in my s belt and it disappears at high rpms, but is distinct when idleing.

    Rattling noise

I have a 01 corolla and when my car is running it makes a rattling noise. It does not get louder when u go faster but when your car is parked and running that noise will drive u mad. I have tightened up the exhaust clamp and put a new one on and i know it isnt that. Sounds like it is coming somewhere by the serpentine belt any clues?

does it sound like metal hitting metal or plastic hitting plastic? do you feel any vibrations from the rattling or is it not that bad? Does the rattling increase in rattle speed as you accelerate? and (last question I swear) does the rattling ever stop during a specific speed or rpm?

Yeah it sounds like metal on metal, but i cant tell any increase in noise when i accelerate but when u sit at a traffic light and your music isnt turned up that noise is bad. It does not sound that high pitched however just clankin constant. I ask cuz i am sick of going to dealerships they always seem to find something new wrong that costs me money.

could also be the torque converter showing signs of wear , how many mile on the car ? i would do like 94 said first , flush it and change the filter. then if it persist , have a mechanic check your motor and tranny mounts. if those are all good , i would start pricing a tourque converter. you could take it to aamco , the tranny specialist , theyll tell you excactly what it is.

possibly your linkage or your tranny. flush it out, change the fluid, and try it then.

damn thats pretty low mileage. you should have a mechanic look at it if the noise is that bad.

yeah i have 83000 miles on it and i have to replace the water pump so i will have my mechanic check out the mounts. dumb question but are torque converters expensive. I am sure u have to pull the tranny out and the cost is prolly labor but how much do the converts cost.

yeah , after i read the "reguardless if park " its not the torque converter , good observation jtweezy , water pump would be a good candadite , does it make the noise when its cold?

also is this the first thing thats ever gone wrong w/ the car?
