Questions about the Unichip and the Apexi S-AFC

I read the Unichip and the Apexi websites and got a pretty good idea of how these things work.

    My questions:
    - Are these things essentially the same?
    - Also, does anyone currently have either of these two installed?
    - How much did the Unichip cost?
    - How is the performance improvement?
    - From what I gather, the Unichip seems easier to remove for dealer/warranty claims. Am I right?

    Thanks!

the unichip is a piggyback ECU - the s-afc is a box with an lcd screen that you connect to the ecu and mount the box inside the car where you can manually adjust your air/fuel. the unichip automatically adjusts it for you and there is no visible evidence that it's there unless you take off the panels and look at the ecu.

Read up newcelica.org about the SAFC... They had too many issues with that and I think people wound up using the Greddy Emanage and I THINK they are playin around with power fc now as well... Some reason the ecu resets itself, this rendering the SAFC useless...Atleast on the Celica GTs...

Matrixowners.com has a lot of talk about the Unichip as more than a few of them have it.

They didn't install it right or they're not adjusting it right because I have the SAFC installed in my 98 and I've had no problems at all with resetting or anything.

    my question is the following......
How can I get rid of that freaking Speed limiter the car has?
I hate the 113!! Besides, Ive gotten up there and all it does is bang against it because It wants to go more. I have about another 1000 rpm to burn in 4th gear, and a whopping 2300 rpm when I drop 5th at 113.

I contacted Unichip awhile ago and it seems it will be almost a $1000 mod for the unit, installation and testing. The gains are between 10 and 20 from what I've seen on their website. I don't think this is a great way to spend cash.

I found it runs around $800 for the Unichip + installation + programming + dyno time just last week. And for a chip you can constantly upgrade as you add mods (IE going from NA to FI) I think it would be well worth its investiment. Not to mention it is PnP so you can remove it when headed for the dealership if your car is still under warranty.

And that's 10-20 % which is still not bad.

That's assuming the first test run goes well. Then you're throwing more cash for the second and [hopefully not] third run.

As it breaks down, its just as cost efficient as a turbo. 3500 for 80HP, 800 for 20HP. 35:8 is just a hair better than 4:1. So not bad. You could also spend $ tuning in a turbo... I might get that....
