Engine Power steering pump removal?!?

    Power steering pump removal?!?

    Is it possible to remove the power steering pump on a 98 rolla im sure its been asked before but im not sure i really want mine gone any ideas or suggestions

    I've removed my a/c already and i really dont care about power steering either so i want it off less work on the motor = more power
    when i removed my a/c i went from a 72 in belt to a 60 inch belt and noticed a gain in torque and hp

    I have no power steering in my MR2 and that's pain in the @ss.
    And I also have a under size steering wheel, stupid me. :D

    To disable it, I think you can just get a short belt and unhook the power steering bump. Don't remove the bump, just in case you want power steering back in the future.

    yeah , uh , before you decide to remove it , try to drive a front wheel drive without it , torque steer ,even in a strait line is a bitch! it is not recommended . not only are you having to turn wheels manually , but you also got to control the axle that powers the vehicle.

    cool lots of input here excellent well heres another thing you guys tell me how hard it is to fix
    my main hose behind the motor is leaking i have to put fluid in every couple of weeks and when i turn left then right real quick (or vice versa) the motor bogs or something it gets really tuff to turn even if i am going as well not all the time though what do you think it is???
    and is there an aftermarket power steering pulley that might help the pull??


    and btw i know the a.c doesnt draw power when off but when you lose a foot in belt lenght that there makes a difference

    sounds like the pump ran too long w/o fluid at ont ime , i would replace the hose , and see if i can find a steering pump reconditioner like "lucas" also a teaspoon of tranny fluid antislip will help too.

    I'm sure you did...especially since the a/c doesn't draw any power when not in use...and at WOT the a/c is shut off...

    Do a search on Psychological horsepower.


    The rack and pinion steering is SPECIFICALLY designed to work with the use of the hydraulic system. YOU do not turn the wheels, you turn a shaft that directs hydraulic fluid which pushes pistons which turn the wheels, the effort you apply to the steering wheel is not directly applied to the steering column as the movent of the column is actually directing passagways for the p/s fluid to flow.

    The fluid is doing the work. By removing the pump you are now adding undue stress on components that are not meant to be stressed continuously that way. but MORE IMPORTANTLY (as steering components are generally all around strong enough) you take away the assist from the p/s pump...assist is an UNDERSTATEMENT as it does the work...

    Also you will actually have REDUCED maneuvering...as the rack and pinion steering...once more being designed as a hydraulic system...is meant for you to apply LITTLE effort while the PUMP does the REAL WORK...gearing and hydraulics...by removing it you are now hindering the effectiveness because it was not designed to have YOU as the only power for steering. Even if you are a big muscley guy...the pump is what supplies the steering response...not the driver.

    SURE, when you're moving no biggy...but the instant you try to take a high speed...any speed...corner...you've lost effectivness...and lost the corner ;)

    So...you will gain no hp from this, cause potential damage to your steering system and undue stress on the steering column and some other components, and you will actually reduce your maneuverability.

    The braking components argument is a little extreme, I know that, but it's still a point worth making. Yes many people have removed their p/s pumps and haven't broken anything but that's a risk...a big risk...they are taking.

    In all honesty, I don't REALLY think you'll shatter your steering column or u-joints therein but still...not a risk I wanna take




    *Side note...the p/s pump in my 240sx is going out...guess what...have you ever actually tried taking a corner in a car that has no p/s? I have...many times...I don't drive my 240 right now...the car does NOT handle well...it won't turn...you're fighting the wheel...I can't even do a doughnut in dirt cause you can't turn the wheel fast enough to manuver

    heres a decision maker for you. find empty parking lot behind a building or secluded , get your car rollin at parking lot speed 15-20 mph . assure nothing is in your path , now do a quick 90'-120' degree turn on the steering wheel . feel how hard it got ? thats just your pump tryin to keep up eith demand , now imagine w/o it.

    Pretty sure that's an easy part to change...high pressure line right? The one on top top?

    hardest part is getting the line off the pump...think it's a 17mm...then remove it from the rack...I forget the size...12 maybe? Be a good idea to have a line wrench or you'll most likely round it off...that's the other hard part...or a flank drive wrench...MAKE sure you get all the gaskets and stuff you need too...I think the only one you need is the "princess lea hair doo" looking one that goes on the pumpt...HA HA...any way yup...


    *oh yeah, side note...you can use transmission fluid in place of p/s fluid...you can even mix 'em together. Dextron II or higher...I'de go with III + but not synthetic stuff (T-IV)...just dextron III. Dealership recommended too, on all our cars we do p/s pump work on we use dext III...not sure if it's cheaper than p/s fluid though...*

    cool i have another power steering pump at the house ill swap it out and see how that works and ill get that hose swapped out too

    Yeah but she's all stock right now..saving up for engine and tranny swaperoony...something a little unorthodox...but not gonna say anything since I don't actually HAVE the engine to say something about <img src="http://vvti.net/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Wink" />
