    power locks

I've posted something similar in other forums, but I figured I'd post it here in A/V/S with some updated info..

I really want power locks in my CE. I'm tired of reminding people to lock their doors and occasionally finding a door unlocked and not knowing how long it's been that way.

I know it was available as an option but the one I got didn't have it. I've asked the dealer service dept. if they would put it in and they said they can't. I'd have to go aftermarket, which I really don't want to do. I'd like to have the stock switch in the armrest and turn-twice key action and the feeling of knowing it's genuine Toyota parts.

So I'm wondering, if the dealer won't do it, how hard it would be to just source the parts and put it in myself? I've ordered the Toyota service manuals and wiring diagrams and they should be here soon. I've already figured out how to take apart some of my door. I could probably get most of the parts from a junkyard and maybe order some from the dealer.

Any idea how complicated this is and how long it might take? Maybe I should just convince the dealer to do it anyway. I wonder how much that would cost.

I have installed power locks as well as a trunk pop into my CE. I bought a $40 kit that included actuators, mounting hardware and a wiring harness. In my opinion its not worth adding switches in the door. I just attached the power locks to my aftermarket alarm, Its been working great with no problems. Installing the power locks into the doors takes a bit of work, probably about an hour a door. It took longer for me but I also added Infinity Component speakers, sound dampening and rust proofing. For the rear doors you have to bet the wiring grommets/tubes that go from the frame to the door so you can properly run the cables into the door.

I need to buy this kit, which kit did u buy???

I might just do that for the two front doors, and so instead of having switches u just wired it to the brain of the alarm??

The kit I bought was from a chain up here in Canada called Princess Auto. They also had kits that included a keyless entry module. You can get kits pretty cheap on e-bay. Yeah I just wired the power lock module to the lock/unlock leads of my aftermarket alarm. You definetly don't need the switches, its so much easier to just lock and unlock it from outside.

How did you wire the rear doors? I see the hole in the frame for the wire harness. It's got a rubber stopper covering it. I don't see a hole in the door, though. Did you have to drill a hole?

I got a look at moonshadowmadness' Corolla pictures which is exactly the same as mine except he got power locks and cruise control from the factory. I'm so jealous!
