Possible mods on a 4A engine?

okay so i have thought of doing a swap on my rolla before but now id just want to stick with my 4A engine at the time being... (one reason is i plan on buying my uncle's Integra GSR)

having said that i want a little more power out of my 4A engine. ill probably go with some engine rebuild or something. or even a small s/c because a turbo would probably blow my engine to pieces... what do you guys have in mind? budget is 2.5-5K$ tops of course i dont have the cash at the moment so this is kinda a "project-to-be" kinda thing...

    thanks!!!! =______=

If your planning on buying the GSR why waste your money on mods on the rolla? Save the money for the GSR and modifiy that to your liking.

^ well ill be keeping this car for a long time so modding it would NOT be a waste of money... about the GSR, its partially modded on anyways so ill probably leave it alone...

rolla's my first car so ill definitely keep it; unless my mom/i crash it and total it or something *knocks on wood* hope that does not happen...

back to the topic... engine mods? ~balance everything/polish ports~ does anyone know if i can do double carbeurator??? =_____=

I like the way you think. My rolla is also my first car and its not going anywhere. Do you have the 4afe? If you have the 5k budget I say drop in a 4AGE Blacktop or if you get lucky and find one, a 4AGZE redtop with supercharger. Get one from a jdm importer as they have low mileage/kilometerage :p. It beats trying to make a 4afe better.

Im only speaking from personal experience. My cousin had a 90 corolla sedan with a 4afe. Best option was to swap out the 4afe. There may be others who have modified the 4afe but I think its pointless. The cost of modifyin a 4afe would probably cost more than swapping while the swap would give you the same if not more power.

Depends what you swap...there was a guy down in FL with a 20psi 4AFE. Unless he swapped a 4AGE..but I don't think he did.

In all honesty...modifying any of these engines is somewhat pointless, as it's not going to provide enough of a power/cash ratio. If you want fast and cheap, find a 5.0 foxbody or something. :)

uhhh.... well.... my goal atm is not to build a 10 sec car... because if i did want a 10sec car ill probably do that with my uncle's integra. (not saying 10sec is impossible in corollas) my goal is simply to bring up my hp some... reason: no idea yet...

one reason why i asked for engine mods is cuz my mom and i share 1 car and doing a swap surely will take a day or more. all 7 days of our sched is full so we'll definitely need a car... if swap is the best thing to do then ill wait til i get the GSR...

sorry to sound like an ass or something which I'm not trying to be, since you guys are sharing the rolla, why don't you give it to your mom when you get the integra, trust me I've spent enough money on my car and say it truly is pointless to spend money and make it faster. I've spend 12 grand in complet mods for the car and over 4 grand on swapping it to manual and getting a newer 7afe and porting and polishing it. No matter how much you mod it, you still won't beat the integra with the same mods. Right now I drive a GC8 impreza wrx straight from Japan in the philippines now and I thought my corolla was quick for a corolla, but compared to this new ride its 5 times faster then my corolla. Seriously I learned that big mistake on spending so much money on that car when later on in life you can have a better one that's worth modding. SO I say no to modifiying the 4afe, its pointless specially with a 3 spd auto. If you really love that car like I used to with mine, Do the 4age 20v swap with a manual. That was the project I was doing that got cut short cause I ended up moving back to the philippines for school.

nah we just got rain here in cebu. Getting the car tuned for another touge run sunday with the big boys in town. Then I'll give you guys some nice pics and vids. Ya its wasting money, but hey like you said you worked for it. I agree I worked for every mod I put in my corolla. Oh well the only thing you get with the corolla in the states is originality and a big heart for staying witht he corolla as a tuner car.

Well the FX is already a pretty light car - swapping a 5-speed for the auto would make a night and day difference. You could go to a multi carb setup - but you got to make sure that the engine can suck in that much gas. Probably much better to get a better carb than OEM piece - Weber or Mikuni carbs. I've heard of people using a Holley carb - easier to get parts for and re-jet if needed. You could even try a throttle body fuel injected system - but now the money is starting to add up - this point a swap would be cheaper.

Could also beef up the existing engine - new springs, different cam (maybe more lift and duration), upgrade the ignition, etc. I've seen mildly built up 4AC powered AE86 do mid 15seconds in the 1/4 - compared to about 18-19 sec for stock. Though those are RWD and have an advantage with weight transfer. But I could easily see your OEM engine putting out and extra 20HP with jut some bolt ons (OEM ~70HP something like 53-55 HP to the wheels in stock form - extra 20HP is a HUGE bump).

honestly..... if you want to make the corolla fx a fun and FAST car (fast in the sense of.... 14's, maybe high 13's).... then get a 4agze.... for the kind of cash you're talking about you could easily get a 1/2 cut...... i would be astonished if even the ae101 half cut parts wouldn't bolt directly in (and i'm talking about the a/t to manual conversion)..... toyota tends to keep things the same (it's easier & cheaper).

the ae82 fx's are light little cars, and they have the mount setups for 4a motors & C-series trans (or an E series trans with slight modification to the mounts themselves, not the car).

i can guarantee you that an ae82 fx with an ae101 4agze (just stock longblock) would walk all over a gsr....
