Engine Popping it into neutral without the clutch...

    Popping it into neutral without the clutch...

    How many of you do this? Anyone know what is happening mechanically? Does it wear or break anything prematurely?
    I like doing it cause I'm lazy...

    If it slips easily (no resistance) into neutral, you're fine..if you have to pull/force it out of gear, you're probably stressing something.

    I wouldn't do it - puts a lot of unnecessary load on the the collers and shift forks. Same thing as preloading the shifter - some swear it speeds up shifting. Probably only if you have straight cut gears or dog gear engagements - no syncros - like the older Muncie M21 or M22 crashboxes. Eventually it will chew up the syncros or really chew up the forks, bearings - then you may not be able to get it in or out of a gear.

    ur not breaking anything... i can drive with no clutch at all... meaning i can up shift and down shift with no clutch...it all about timing. for instance 3rd to 4th...tha sychronizer will open wen u let go of tha accelerator, thats wen u take out of gear into neutral and then to another gear. in order to dwon shift u have to have a higher rpm to down shift. i can do this all day.wif practice u can race wif no clutch. i did many times... its scary but it impress tha chicks haha

    i do it sometimes... but i have to pull it pretty hard.... it doesnt make any strange sounds or anything like that so its cool with me... but what do i know... if this is bad i wanna know so i can stop

    CadetLee is correct. If you're either accelerating (engine pulling wheels) or decelerating (wheels pulling engine) and you're popping it out of gear, then yes, you are probably wearing the dogteeth on the collars out (cog wheels that actually engage the selected gear). However, as long as there isn't a load on the transmission, then it's fine. The only thing pressing the clutch does is to remove any kind of load on the gears. But, you don't HAVE to press the clutch to remove the load on the transmission. If it just slides out of gear without really having to force it, then there probably isn't any tension on the gears and it's all alright.

    I have gotten in the habit of just pushing the clutch in and pulling out of gear. But it is ture that you do not need to push the clutch in at all while you are driving. I don't persoanlly do it, but I have seen a friend and my dad do it.
