It allows you to control which gear you are in to a certain extent. From common speculation, said manual shifting an automatic is harmful to the tranny but according to my friend attending UTI, it doesn't harm it at all. I don't manually shift myself except for a few times when I feel like it. There's a delay after you manually shift it to shift gears so you'll have to time it just right. But in the end, its kind of retarded since its still an automatic. It might be slightly faster but its negligible.

manual shifting an auto on your car should be fine. i did it all the time. just dont redline it all the time. i redlined everyday for a year and screwed up my transmission. the mechanic i took it too knew right away i did some crazy shit to it. well thats when i also had my ecu flashed and had my car redline at 6500 or 6800rpm? i think? i was stupid in doing so at the time but it was fun. more power but less torque.. haha.

Hey I know some people that have automatic but still play with their gears like they have tip or something. Going from L to drive. Is that bad for the car? also my gas pedal is hard to press. I think the cable needs greasing. Anyone have any solutions? I can't get to the cable inside the housing.

You want the feeling of a manual either buy one or do a conversion, other than that keep it in drive, its just easier.

i know a couple of people who used to do this regularly and each of them had to replace their transaxles within two years. these were all Toyotas, and all had the belief that their trannies "should" be ok.

If you want the most out of the tranny without manually shifting it then get a shift kit to replace the valves.
