    OT: flew some kites today

for those of you that have noticed the "(the kite guy)" in my sig, this is why:

great weather and some spare time, met up with some local fliers and had some fun. flew several kites including this one, one of my favorites:

pictures from todays fly HERE , I had as many as 5 kites up at one time personally. Together we had a couple dozen up at once, and kept them up most of the afternoon

to keep it *ahem* somewhat on topic, the corolla makes a great transport for kites with the 40% rear seat folded down. kites fit straight in without a bend :)

For what I'm seeing it's a big kite. When I used to be a kid I used to fly kites with blades in the tail and have a contest with the others, it was fun. Have you ever try that before?

actually yes, but ill never admit it to the AKA :)

i think we all did stuff like that back in the day. its part of the kite flying rite of passage.

that white kite is a relativly large Rok, however i have a larger one :) Rok's are a bit touchy since there are three adjustments to ballence. also they are "fighting" kites in the first place, so a bit of instability is to be expected. get the adjustments right though, and they will park overhead at imposibly steep angles and sit like there glued there till the wind quits.

My largest kite is over 200 sqare feet. it is flown on 1100# test 1/4" dacron line. its tails are 160' long.

kites commonly (in the kite community at least) get much larger than that, some going into the 400-500 square foot range and beyond. its all dependant on your confort level flying this sort of thing, and how deep you wallet is.

heres a site to browse to shop for some more exotic kites:

What kind of line do you use for the kite you currently have? I've seen huge ones that require fishing line. Thanks for the link by the way.
