    oil issue

Im burning oil in my car i think. I'm using Mobile 1 synthetic and after 3,000 miles i'm down to 1 line on the dipstick on a cold engine.
i have 63k on the car and i do alot of highway mileage doing 80mph so thats like 2700rpm

Is this normal with synthetic oil or wat?
    i have a 00 rolla

and i havo no leaks. i put 4 quarts into the car and i was hoping to go 5k on the oil but i guess i won't be doing that

when you changed the oil before did you start the engine so it fills the filter then check the oil level? otherwise that dropped you a 1/4 quart right there.

if that's not the problem I'd say your engine is burning oil.. piston seals or head gasket is probably on its way out. I run synthetic in my engine, 55K miles now, burns less than 1/8 qt per 5000

no i filled the filter with oil before i put it in then i put 4 quarts in

i did run regular oil till about 45-50k then after that i swtiched to mobile 1 synthetic then royal purple then back to mobile 1 syntetic then to mobile 1 5000 which is regular oil then i'm back to mobile 1 syntetic. I was told switching back and forth wit the non syn and syn messes up ur engine maybe i'm truly screwed

switching to non synthetic to synthetic could damage your engine.

ya i probably did that going from mobile 1 synthetic to mobile 5000 and back to synthetic, but i couldn't resist, it was a sale, 1.83 per quart, compared to 5 sometin for mobile 1 synthetic

burning a quart every 3000 isn't nearly as bad as some cars. Not that big of deal as long as you watch it. I know one person with an mr2 that burns a quart every 100 miles, that's a truely broken engine.

I'd just stick with cheap oil at this point. no point in going back really.

so if you replace the seals and the head gasket, would that eliminate the burning oil?

    viscosity break down

you should be so lucky that your'e using less than a quart of oil between oil changes. i would think a loss of 8 ounces at 3000 miles is not indicative of any problems with your engine at all. if your driving at 80 plus mph your gonna use some oil believe me.

i just replaced my oil with some mobile 1 synthetic again 2 days ago and it'll be more highway then normal so we shall see how much i trully burn. And btw it wasn't a quart, i was at the last dot before a empty dipstick on the oil dipstick at 3300 miles so that slike 3 quarts right there....

edit: plus i used a K&N oil filter lets see how the car goes now

There are only two dots on the 8th gen dipstick - do you mean it was the last dot or did you mean it was barely on the dipstick. Last dot means your a quart low, barely on the dipstick means your two quarts shy.

The 1ZZ-FE on the 8th gen have a rep to consume oil. Usually a problem with the valve seals or stuck piston rings. Switching back and forth between synthetic and conventional doesn't really hurt (unless you use a $hitty brand) - but it dilutes any benefit that synthetic would provide.

Probably wouldn't hurt to send in a sample of used motor oil fron this drain to a lab like Blackstone http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ - cost is $20 and they will ship you a free container for sending the sample in. Pretty cheap insurance and a good way to keep an eye on potential problems that might come up.

Here are examples of how mine turned out:

I have to agree with FishEcpo on the blackstone labs deal. I buddy of mine told me about it. Apparently they can tell you if there are other things in your oil as well. :) Pretty sweet deal. I've been wanting to get it done actually.

if its the head its easier to replace. that really sucks for the 8th gen guys. I know that the 00+ motors are more affected, but i heard of some of the 98-99 motors also having oil problems. ive been trying to check if the oil loss is due to the pcv valve allowing too much oil through.

Well now how much are you looking at for repairs on the engine? You should have spent the extra $4 per quart and not have to go through all this hassle. Also I have an 01. I have no issues at all with my oil. Was doing synthetic blend for life of car up to 27k then I jumped on Mobil 1 Full synthetic and Ive had no issues whatso ever. Currently at 32k.

as for the dip stick it was like on the last dot or just under as in almost not on the dipstick
right now its just a hair above the second dot on the dipstick after i changed the oil and i jsut put 640 miles on it and no oil consumption yet i'll check tomorow morning on a cold engine how it looks and stuff. I just got home and its dark and stuff.

my mileage went up to about 36-37mpg doing straight 80mph non stop at 2700rpm wit the occasional flooring it like once in a while

So mileage wise i'm getting wat i'm suppsoed to be getting really on regular gas and all with fresh oil and that k&n oil filter
I was at about 32-33 highway doin the same speed. As for the smoke i don't know yet i have to wait for my friend to drive behind me and tell me

    about the topic:
ill have to agree with Mayur. i in my opinion thinking of the long run, specially with our cars is the better choice.

you made a small problem a bigger one simply because you went from to regular to synthetic then back to regular, the viscosites generated are very different even if you used the same ones it will cause damage the certain parts will absorb and other won't due to different grades and viscosities. trust me i know i have learned my lesson, which is why i am going to be very careful about his new engine i just got recently especially when i paid out the ass for the modifications and everything altogether which is probably worthe more than the car i know for a fact.but i did not want to buy a new one so this is why i did this.
