i wanted to set up an autocross this upcoming summer. for a location i found a conveniently-located abandoned airport near a landfill. the area is public. i did not see any "no trespassing" signs or anything of that nature in the area. could the police arrest or give the participants tickets for using the runway for autocross?

Though it would vary from area to area, generally, you would need a permit to setup anything in that area. Running an autocross or even camping out on the pavement without proper paperwork/permission equals a ticket fest. Just because it is public property doesn't mean that you can setup anything you want - still have to ask/get permission.
