odd chattering noise...not sure what it is

    Hello all...
I have a 2002 5-speed Corolla LE with 61,500 miles. A few days ago, the car started making an odd noise from the drivetrain (I think). The noise does not occur in 1st gear, no matter what throttle load or RPM. As soon as I shift into 2nd gear, the car starts to make a chattering noise that sounds almost like a diesel engine. The noise goes away completely when I depress the clutch, but comes back as soon as I let it out. If I rev up the engine in neutral or with the clutch in, there is no odd noise. The noise also changes pitch when I let off the throttle in gear. This noise DOES NOT occur in 1st gear! There doesn't seem to be any power loss, but the steering does feel a little numb, but that could be due to slightly lower tire PSI because of weather below 20 degrees. Please help, as I need this car, and I'm not sure if it's safe to drive.

check your power steering, might be leaking fluid...I have the Chattering noise when i start the car and then when I try to turn the wheel the car makes more noise, but mine is loud because i have a big leak. Once i put a 1/2 a bottle of power steering fluid the noise goes away....
