2003 Corolla. Have a Magnaflow muffler with resonator-back 2.25" piping installed. Rims, tires and audio and that's about it. It was undoubtedly causing a lean mixture. Straight up, no question about it. Never put it on an engine analyzer, but there's not really much else to choose from. If it were spark related, then reinstalling the stock airbox wouldn't have fixed the problem, not to mention that the 1ZZ has a KNOCK SENSOR. If it were carbon deposits, then I'd still have a problem with detonation with the stock airbox.

Bought it for $200, so I'd sale it for $100. I can take pics if you want, but the only thing wrong with it is a couple of scratches. Filter still looks new, pipe still looks new save the scratches. All mounting accessories and blah blah blah...

    Want it?

    No more CAI...

Because AEM SUCKS!!! Nothing would cure the detonation problem except replacing the stock airbox. And so my ad hominem argument is that AEM CAI SUCKS goat balls. I'd love to bitch some more because I know you all would love to read my bitching, but I did enough of that in response to the previous thread. Go read if you please...

Anyone interested in a used AEM CAI?????

    What year car?
What other mods do you have?
An AEM CAI that causes detonation is strange.
    BTW how much;)

Why don't you just get an Apexi SAFC or something of the like? People have fuel problems all the time, but that doesn't mean that you take the mods off your car...

you might wanna check out your MAF sensor... it may need cleaned or replaced... thats why its running lean it cant sense the ammount of air coming in and since the factory air box restricts it more than a CAI it would cause it to run closer to a normal mixture

    Try a higher octane gas?

If your gas is pinging because of too much advanced timing, then try some higher octane gas and see if that is the problem.
If it still knocks, then your CAI isn't the cause of your problem.
Give it a try before you go ripping it off.

Measures I have repeatedly taken to correct the problem:
    1) cleaned MAF sensor multiple times with electrical parts cleaner
    2) ran EVERY brand and grade of gasoline known to mankind
    3) used every fuel system cleaner I could get my hands on
    4) re-sealed intake-to-throttle body connection with vacuum grease
    5) reset the ECU many many times
    6) opened spark plug gaps a tiny bit (from 0.042 to 0.044 inches)

    Nothing helped at all.

Here's what I think the problem was:
Stock airbox has the little plastic mesh directly in front of the MAF sensor to direct the air into a straight line as it hits the MAF sensor. It decreases turbulence so the sensor gets a more accurate reading. CAI doesn't have that. More turbulence means a less accurate reading, meaning the ECU sees LESS air coming in than what actually is, thereby creating a lean mixture. End of story. The CAI is already off and the stock airbox back on. Yes, an SAFC would solve the problem undoubtedly. I don't have the time OR the money to invest for that right now. So, in the interest of NOT having burnt/crowned pistons and valves, the stock airbox is back on and my engine once again runs correctly.
