    Nightmare!! VVTI to 1999 motor

    I bought a 2000 VVti with a bad motor for about $500.

I then got a 99 non VVTi motor from eBay. I did the swop but there are some problems:

    - The 99 does not have individual coils
    - The 99 does not have VVti, so the connector to the VVti valve is just hanging.

So, my question is how can I get around these problems?

I am thinking of switching the valve covers and filing down the coils so that they can go into the plug holes on the 99.

I think I can get everything to fit except the VVt valve. Which I can ignore if possible. Do you guys think the ECU will throw A CEL or the ECUs are just not compatible

    Any help will be appreciated.

I suggest you convert and use plug wires since the 99 motor is made for it. The VVTI has to do with emissions so you might throw a few codes. I'm sure you can bypass those, ignore them, or use a 98-99 ecu chip. Was this 99 motor your only choice? I would have gone with another VVTI1ZZFE motor from a 00-02 Corolla

I don't think you can even start the car without the vvti thing connected.
When I installed a CAMCON to my 01, I cut the vvti wire in the ECU and tried to start the car, but it won't start at all.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I just wanted a cheap motor.

To convert to plug wires I would need to put in the harness from the 99 motor. This obviously is a PITA.

    Maybe I have no option.

Right now I have everything in, including the individual coils. I have spark but the thing is just coughing and hissing and won't start.

Like Rollatuner suggested, I used the Harness and computer from the 99. The thing fired up.

I still have to work around some issues with the temp sensor on the filter side of the intake and the transmission range sensors which are different. Might have to look for an intake from a '99.

    Thanks guys for the input.
