    New tranny at 13,000 miles?

Help! The dealership is saying that my transmission has been abused, and the warranty has been voided. They want $3500 for a new transmission! My car only has 13,090 miles on it, and everything (even the tires) is in good condition.

My 5 speed Corolla was making a grinding noise shifting in and out of 3rd gear. The dealer says the pressure plate is broken, and the 3rd gear synch is out??? They said that the only thing that can cause this type of damage is severe abuse.

I don't race or 'speed shift'. I have driven manuals before without any problems. Any suggestions or ideas about what would cause this?

The pressure plate is part of your clutch. It must be OK though since it's not grinding in and out of other gears and operating normally on launch. Your 3rd gear synchronizer or bearing must be bad and should absolutely be honored on warranty. You should see another dealer or contact Toyota headquarters.
Others have had similar problems which was repaired on warranty; http://www.9thgencorolla.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=491
