Check the battery cables. Starter connections and cables. Seems like it's trying to turn but not getting enough juice. If you know the starter is working properly then somewhere along the line the current isn't getting throught like it should.

When my car did the same thing it was the starter, but you said this isnt the case. When my girlfriend car did it, it was the ignition switch. You might wanna check the fuel pump too.

You may want to try cleaning the battery terminals..a friend of ours was borrowing some guy's (beat) Ford Ranger..it had been starting all day, then wouldn't. The terminals looked perfectly fine (no corrosion or anything)..but he called the owner (an aircraft mechanic) and he said to clean the terminals. I didn't think it would work, but it did..

    If it's a manual, will it push-start?

I am going to say with almost 100% certainty that you have a power issue to the starter. I have had this happen in my sister's neon once and one time in the corolla. Check your terminals and clean them, even if they look clean. Check the wires going to your starter. When it happened on my sis's neon, it turned out that the power wire was ran incorrectly when repaired once and basically melted through part of the battery casing and itself.

If it's not anything in the ignition system then it may be the fuel pump. Thats all you need to start is a spark and fuel.

yea thats something i should have mentioned, considering it happened to me last week. check the fuel pump, the gas (not the gauge, just tap the tank!). Check the fuel pressure (with a gauge or... just loosen off the incoming line and turn the key very briefly... then let the gas dry up if it came out, thats the easy way to check if you have ANY pressure.)
