have you kept up with the maintenance? what are your driving habits? i'm guessing you're the second owner of your 01 corolla. please give us more details.

ok so my neighbor came over and he says it is misfiring but doesnt know which one so i need to get a scanner and check which one. then it with either be a coil pack or the plug but in the end i have to spend money. and i also agree the dealers are all assholes they dont care about you or the car they just want the money i know my dad used to work for one. why must things brake on the worst day ever.

If its a bad coil pack, you can get one at the yard.

It has nothing to do with the transmission. Seems to me that you have 1 or more dead cylinders. This is what it causing all the shaking. Combustion is only occurring in some cylinders and so throws the balance off dramatically. Check the direct on coil packs and make sure the wiring is all intact. Check your spark plugs to see it any of them are damaged. I seriously doubt this is the problem but also check all your vacuum lines and hoses. I would recommend you bring the car to a mechanic and have him do a compression test. The problem could also be due to fried rings that aren't doing their job anymore. The mechanic can take it from there. And I do agree with jcrwzr. What is your driving style like?

interesting.. i would also agree with checking compression. I would go to a mechanic you trust though. Not a big fan of the dealership

thanks for the help ive kept up with the maintenance help i just put in royal purple 5w30 in the engine and their atf for the tranny 1500miles ago. last night when i came home the check engine light would flash on for 10 sec then go off i really hope the engine isnt shot. but the funny part is yesterday i went to emissions here in ct and it passed. it was acting up 2 days before that but it didnt do it while i was there so idk. it has only gotten worse from there so now im worried. well my driving style is a little mixed im kind of hard on it 3-4k when shifting sometimes 5 when getting on highway but only when i really need to but i also drive like and old person at night when im tired so i would say mixed and im actually the 3rd owner of the car 1st was a lease 2nd lease too and now i bought but carfax says it was maintained at the dealership all its life so. but also the last owner was an old person so that may have something to do with the tranny problem but the engine stuff is new

rent/buy an OBD2 scanning tool from your local autoparts store. is there an Autozone in CT? they loan OBD tools. When the engine check light turns on, pull the code. If I remember correctly a flashing CEL (check engine light) has something to do with either system too lean, timing, spark, or vacumm.

you also mentioned that it's been through 2 leases. I have friends who lease and they treat their cars like crap. So when dealerships talk about their pre-owned vehicle sales (trade ins or leases), I take it with a grain of salt. Because... what's the bottom line? MONEY!! Of course the dealership will tell carfax that the car has been kept in shape!

Anyway, my auto mechanical knowledge only goes so far, if I were you, I'd take it to a trusted mechanic. If you're the weekend warrior, get the OBD2 scanning tool and find out why the CEL or MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) is turning on.

Bring it to a mechanic ASAP. The problem could get worse. Remember to do a compression test.

ok so i solved the problem too most of day i went to autozone and rented a scanner went though and read codes came up with misfire cyclander 3 and 4 so cleared then let go again took a little while and drive around but kicked off misfire in 4 ok so now i moved the coils around 3 into 4 and vice versa cleared and came up still with 4 so it isnt the coil took out plug in 4 moved to 3 and cleared drove around check engine light came on this time and was now in 3 so figured out it was a plug. and went and got denso iridiums plugs for it and replaced all of them and no more problem. things i learned today dont get crap spark plugs use original ones in engine and also Autozone can not clear any codes on ur engine if you go there some 10k fine if they do but you can rent a scanner for 150 and use it and bring it back when your done. so it was a fun day and thanks all for the help with trying to solve problems i just hope the problem doesnt get any worse after this hole ordeal
