i cut off the wires from the light for the ashtray and hooked them to that...that waythey turn on with everything else...im not sure if thats the easiest way tho... and to do this i had to cut a hole in the top of the tach housing for the wires to come out of

it's the negative wire lead to the coil...... that is, if the tach you have is meant for a single coil setup (most are)

there should also be a wire already running to your gauges whether your car has a tach gauge set or not..... it will be the only a/c voltage back there

Since you have multiple coil packs (2 sets) and have a distributorless system - your choices are to:

    - get a tach driver (basically wires inline to the sharded 12V supply feed into the coils and output a signal that triggers most aftermarket tachs)

    - or wire it into a 12V source and hope that the tach can trigger off the noise in the system (just as Live2drum suggested). The Gtech Pro meters pick up your RPMs that way - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Depends on how "clean" your 12V is.

    Good Luck.

can i hook up the positive and negative 12v supply to the ones for the radio? then i can just stick the distributor wire one by one to the wires behind the cluster till i find the one that works?

Get a wring diagram - doing that is a sure way of shorting out something important. A 12V feed from any source and chassis ground may be all you need. Depends on the tach - otherwise you will have to get the sense wire from the ECU or find some other way to do it.

    Positive is 12v power.
Negative is ground, if I remember correctly.
Light determines when the backlight comes on -- I stuck the wire in with my taillight fuse in the fuse panel..when the taillights are on (ie headlights on), the backlight on the tach lights up.
Signal goes either to the ECU wire as noted above, tapped into the cluster, or maybe somewhere else..I used the cluster.
