Need help ASAP with coilovers...please look 911

okay guys i have a problem. I searched this forum and found nothing on how to install coilovers. I bought some skunk2 coilovers for my 98 corolla. I have never installed coilovers so i am a little confused...Am i supposed to cut the little metal piece that is on the strut in order for the coil to go all the way down or am i supposed to mount the coilover on the metal piece? If i mount it on that piece it doesn't seem stable. Or am i supposed to cut that piece so that the coilovers can sit where the factory springs would go. I have attached some pictures so please take a look and let me know.

I'm not sure how to post pictures but you can view them here on my yahoo photo things... please take sometime to view the pictures so you know what the heck i am talking about.

thanks in advanced...a quick responce would be appreciated because i need my only car to run. LOL

ok, here is what you need to do.
    1) flip the strut up side down onto a towel.
    2) get a hammer, I prefrer a metal 3lb hammer.
    3) start tapping the tab. I know it's welded; but it's bird shit welded on. So just give it a few good taps and it will loosen.
4)after the removal of the tab, wrap the are of the strut the coilover sleeve will sit over with duct tape. This will help with the rattling.
    5) reassemble your strut.
I hope this will help ya out.

hawaii thanks for the response. earlier at work i asked some co-workers and they said just about the same things as you did. I'll just trim some of that part off with a dremel tool and do as you said. Thanks for the response i appreciate it.

i'll post some pictures when its all done.

I got my coilovers installed now but i have a question. I noticed the coils for coilovers are alot shoter than the stock ones. So now that i have everything put together. it seems there is some gap between the top of the spring to the upper mounts. Is this normal? When i hit bumps you can here the spring hitting the top mounts. I don't know much about these things. thanks in advance.

Ok, there is suppposed to be an upper cap/hat to keep your spring set in place. I'm assuming your car is jacked up? If so, when you lower your jack be sure the spring is sitting in the cap/hat. Also when you lower your jack the gap should dissappear. There is not supposed to be any gap between the springs and the top mounts. LOL...I know, the coilover springs are alot shorter than the stock springs and lowering springs..looks kinda scary but don't worry about it, that's how it's supposed to be.
How low do you have your coilovers adjusted to? It may be your car is bottoming out? Another thing you might want to check is if you tightened that single nut that sits atop of your strut.

another thing is the longer spring supposed to be in the rear or front. The instruction say to use the shorter spring in the front. Doesn't seem right to me.

Yes, the shorter spring goes in the front and the longer one goes in the rear.

yeah got it too work fine...i just forgot to put a part on. I now have a nother deliemma. I lowered the front all the way down and i still have a about a 3 finger gap. Is there any way to resolve this? The rear seem to lower a lot more. Actually the rear is only set to half and there is pretty much no gap. I need to get the front a lot lower but i don't know how to. I'm using stock shocks with skunk2 sleeve coilovers. any suggestions? I want to thank you guys for helping even though my questions are pretty retarded. Thanks again...

Your stock struts wont last very long. You should've replaced them with performance stuts, like Tokico's.

Wait for it to settle, the height will drop a bit in 1-3 weeks depends on how you drive.

Do you have the threaded sleeve on the correct way?
The top should be threaded all the way to the top and the bottow should have a solid unthreaded portion on the bottom, I can't remeber if my GC's were like that.

Did you remeber to cut your bumpstops?
There are other things you can do to make your front lower.
I'd wait till you get a set of aftermarket struts first, the time you will invest is not worth it, because of the height you want your car, the stock struts won't last very long. Anywho if you do decide to go forward with this, you will need a sawzaw or a really good grinder to cut off the spring perch for the stock springs. You would need to cut off the spring perch and then grind down the excess, but not to much, the coilover sleeve will then sit onto the residule bead of the strut. Basically once you do this, there is no going back.
