    Muffler Swap - Need Help!

I finally got to replacing the stock muffler on my 99 Corolla with a TRD one. The whole process has been a pain in the ass, as many things under the car are, due to rusty bolts, laying on your back, and the like.

Getting to the point: for those familiar with how Corolla mufflers are attached to the car, they have this little metal loop thingie that holds the muffer and then, with the other end it goes around a rubber part that in turn sits on two little metal pegs which are welded to the chassis. My question is: how do you get the rubber thing off of the pegs? The pegs are shaped in a way such that the rubber part is supposed to go on, but not come off. Does that mean that I have to just somehow cut this one off and get a new one for the new muffler?

I'd just like some feedback from someone who has some experience with this procedure.

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah, pretty much the only way to do it is have them cut and welded back on.

It's a rubber thing, there isn't really anything that needs welding back on.

I just read Vamps DIY on this. He says that it basically just comes right off... I think mine is just older than his was when he did it (the under of his car looks brand friggin new!) . So I guess mine might have just dried up and expanded or something.

Anyone else care to share any experiences?

The metal pegs need to be cut and welded back on. I've never had success trying to pull them off, personally.

the word is wd-40. Spray it one or twice and take you a long screw driver or a small prybar and pry it off if that dont work take a knife and cut it off and put a new one on

I'll go get another one of the rubber things and give this a try. Cutting off the rubber part seems a lot better than having to cut the pegs and weld them back on.

    Thanks!

the rubber thing is held on to the two pegs with little lock washers. i broke them both, WD 40'd up the pegs and pulled off the rubber thing with my hands. installed the muffler and put the rubber thing back on without the lock washer deals, haven't had a problem in 3 years.
