    muffler/exhaust sounds

i'm trying to decide whether to get a TRD muffler or a magnaflow system on my 2003 corolla s.

as i understand it - the TRD won't mess with my warranty, and the TRD is fully legal in all 50 states when it comes to emmissions and sound. what about the magnaflow? also, the TRD has the benefit in that it won't mess with my warranty (right?). the magnaflow has the benefit in that it is an entire cat-back system. with installation costs (as i have no facilities to do it myself), the TRD will come out to be more expensive, but not by that much.

so... my question is, what are people's opinions? which one should i go for? anybody in the boston or NYC metro area that has either installed? want to meet up so i can give it a listen?

The magnaflow won't do anything to your warranty since it's behind all the cats and important exhaust stuff.

The only tools you need to install it are a hacksaw and a couple of wrenches, it's hella easy. I'd go with the Magnaflow any day

    but what about the sound?

i think i'm leaning towards the magnaflow - but what about the sound? is one louder than the other? while i want a nice sound, i don't want my car to be too annoying to my street as i pull in at 1am :p

Re: but what about the sound?

i have magnaflow cat back. Sounds very good. Deep throaty tone, gets attention, but not too loud to attract cops or wake upi your neighbours. Very nice tone.

i had a custom exhaust with no resonator and it was loud and annoying so i decided to get the magnaflow since it had a resonator and it is very quiet at idle and low RPMs untill you get on it and even then its more deep and not raspy.

    TRD, Borla and Magnaflow

 I dont know who said that?? Borla has there own company the dont usually design stuff for our car unless TRD makes them. TRD did not give the rights to Borla. They dont even sound the same. As for Magnaflow. I had the TRD and it was very expencive and kinda ugly, ok it was very ugly. TRD makes some great stuff but however, Company's that are only into exhaust are the way to go. The Magnaflow i just put on and I swear it sounds just like a M3 or 5. Its not a high pitched annoying sound and its deep and even deeper in lower gears. On the highway you can barely hear it and with a supercharger you get you most performance gain in 3rd and 4th gear. 1st and 2nd all boost. :)

i think TRD always contracts out to other companies... they give em the specs but they dont make em themselves. anyway, i have a custom exhaust with no resonator and im really starting to regret it. the noise is always there and its pretty raspy. at highway speeds its unbearable. im thinkin about takin it off and goin with magnaflow simply because i dont have the original exhaust anymore from the cat back so i cant just bolt up a TRD or something... i think a trip to the junkyard's in order :D

I had a TRD before i wrecked my car, it sounded good, but it was real quiet, and too expensive for no performance gain. It was a good sound, but far too quiet, couldnt even attract attention if you wanted to.

The wreck totaled my TRD exhaust, so i had the place that fixed my car write me a check for the ammount of the stock exhaust(insurance will only cover the price of factory parts not aftermarket parts) which i used to purchase a magnaflow cat back system. The place that fixed my car installed the magnaflow for free, since part of the claim included installing new exhaust since the other one got fuct up. So the magnaflow only cost me $100 all said and done.

Overall im much happier with the magnaflow, its a little louder then the TRD, which is good, its cheaper then the TRD, (even if i had to pay for the whole thing it still would of been cheaper) and it actually gives you a small performance gain, since it replaces the small stock piping that comes after the resonator. The only thing i dont like about it are the looks. I have a CE, so i dont have the fancy lip on my rear bumper, so the tip sticks out past the bumper a little, which i dont like, if you look straight down at the tip from above, its about even with the edge of the bumper, but then our bumper goes back in as it goes farther down you know, so the tip looks like it sticks out if your looking at it from the side. The tip is also kinda small too, the TRD was a little big, but this tip isnt much bigger then the rest of the piping, but i still think the TRD tip had a better style/look to it. But then again this tip scrapes a lot less then the TRD when going thru big dips and stuff, so thats another plus, nothing makes you look/feel stupider then scraping your big aftermarket muffler tip going thru dips, haha.

Ok but I would deffinately sudgest getting the Magnaflow cat back, for one its a true cat back, and most of the other 'cat backs' for our car are pretty much just a muffler. Second of all it sounds good, not so quiet like the TRD where you barely know its there, but not so loud that all you think about is how your gona replace it with something else, its the right noise and it has a great tone, deep and throaty. Everyone i talk to says they love the sound of my car. (TRD intake and magnaflow exhaust working together make some great music) Third, its cheaper then the TRD, and many others too. So for the price you cant beat it, even if you add 100 dollars more, you cant beat it, so for anyone having trouble deciding, GET THE MAGNAFLOW!! you wont be disapointed.

ok thats the end of my story.

If you go to www.corollatoys.org you can hear the exhaust along with some other ones. Just go to Engine/Transmission parts
