    muffler/exhaust sounds

'm trying to decide whether to get a TRD muffler or a magnaflow system on my 2003 corolla s.

as i understand it - the TRD won't mess with my warranty, and the TRD is fully legal in all 50 states when it comes to emmissions and sound. what about the magnaflow? also, the TRD has the benefit in that it won't mess with my warranty (right?). the magnaflow has the benefit in that it is an entire cat-back system. with installation costs (as i have no facilities to do it myself), the TRD will come out to be more expensive, but not by that much.

so... my question is, what are people's opinions? which one should i go for? anybody in the boston or NYC metro area that has either installed? want to meet up so i can give it a listen?

correct trd wont mess with the warranty. if you want a catback, a muffler shop can make one for you but if you do that and buy a trd muffler, its gonna be pretty expensive.

I think if you get the trd exhaust you still have to pay toyota to install it. I am not totally sure but that is my guess. but a trd exhuast is pretty damn expensive.

I think what your looking for is the trd. Another company that makes a cat back which I think sounds very much like the trd one, is...foooey don't you hate when You lose your train of thought....ah yes thermal R and D. I think a few people have that here.

the sound comes from the exhaust flowing out of your engine! Lol excuse the smartass response, it bounces off in a certain way and deadens other sounds...Im not good at explaining it really. Look at www.howstuffworks.com for a good explanation.

Any change from the stock muffler (except an oem replacement) will reduce backpressure and allow it to flow more.

well, the TRD muffler is one of those mufflers you wish you had after youve gotten a cheaper muffler... the TRD gives you a very unique sound, but the key is -is that its NOT extremely loud b/c of the shape of the muffler... most other aftermarket mufflers are bullet shaped which gives you a headache... its well worth it, but you most likely have to have toyota install it for you to keep the warranty...also, for the price of a TRD muffler, you can almost get a whole exhaust system for about a little more..

Im not trying to be a smart ass, just sorta explain more on your post d. The cheaper things like on ebay are resinators, a straight through pipe with perforations that have sound deadening material around the them (like fiberglass or something else). The TRD Muffler is a real muffler. It has plates that the exhaust bounces off of and creates the unique tone. Because of the plates, its more restrictive, so the power gain is very small (though the straight through isn't that much either since this is a n/a 1.8 L).

can you contrast that to getting a magnaflow cat-back installed? does it increase airflow out of the engine? and where does the sound come from?

but, all in all, magnaflow or trd? if you had to create a comparison on performance gain and sound quality? and, another factor is while i want a nice sound, i don't want a loud sound....

(i know i'm being a little vague here -- so, again, if any has either installed near me, i'll happily buy a round of drinks if i can come by and hear it in action)

installing a cat-back is pretty easy...if you have a jackstand and a couple wrenches you can do it yourself. i had the luxury of having a hydraulic lift available to me, but it wasn't totally necessary. i've only heard the TRD in action once, but it was definitely one of the best sounding mufflers i've heard. don't know about magnaflow, but either one is probably gonna be good.

its not as easy if your laying on your back in 100 degree weather, with rusty bolts that dont move and blood spirting out of your hands...then you just say "screw it and bring it to a shop!" thats what i did..cost 55 bucks :)

nope, TRD/Greddy mufflers are still a stright thru design.. there are just more material in there to muffle the noise. Thermal R&D is another stright thru muffler.

what you described where sound bounce off plates to cancel out sound is actually a resonating design which is only used in stock mufflers

Oh yeh? I was pretty sure its not. Let me take a look at it but the inlet pipe, I thought, was to the left or right of the outlet pipe. Also other mufflers like borla and magnaflow I know aren't they have commercials even showing that they have plates instead of the fiberglass.

But I dunno about what you were saying on the resonating design, cuz if you have ever seen a resonator....its just like a fart can. And the stock muffler does not have packing.

Ok so your right about mufflers being resonators. Im a dumbass. But not a straight through resonator usually and I swear it doesn't look like a straight through one.
