    MT gear oil...

2003 5-spd. I replaced the gear oil yesterday with synthetic Mobil 1 75W-90 API GL-5 gear oil (good choice or bad??). The owner's manual states 2.0 qt. However, on my previous car ('90 Camry 5-spd) - instructions were to fill until the fluid starts spilling out of the fill hole. There was a volume listed, but it ended up being somewhat more than what was listed in the manual. Is it the same process for the 2003, or is it just 2.0 quarts and no more??

    Thanks,
    Trav

P.S. As a side note, the maintenace schedule never gives a mileage to change manual transmission oil under the normal service schedule. The schedule for severe operating conditions says 30,000 miles. Is that to say that if the car is never operated under severe conditions that the manual transmission oil never needs to be changed (according to Toyota)??

I thought it was supposed to be 2 LITERS, not quarts. Not sure thou, but you might want to reread the manual to see how much your supposed to fill it with.

It is two quarts because I overfilled mine. I poured in enough to bring it up to the fill hole and it took 2.5 qts. After realizing what I had done I called the Master Tech at the dealership. He told me that there was not a serious problem but to stick with two quarts only next time.

You would be a bit better of with a GL-4 oil, but GL-5 is also acceptable. The synchros will last longer with GL-4.

come again now? synchro's last longer with GL-4 as opposed to GL-5? How's that? I had always thought that DEXRON III exceeds DEXRON II and GL-5 exceeds GL-4 and energy conserving oil class SJ exceeds SG. Is this not how it works? This makes me curious if you' don't care to explain.

    Thanks,
    Trav

    BTW - 1.0quarts = 996 mL, or 1.0 qt = 1.0L. The owner's manual actually states 1.9L or 2.0 qt.

GL-5 has twice as much EP (extreme pressure) additive as GL-4. That makes GL-5 better at reducing gear wear, however, the EP additive also causes the synchros to corrode - they will corrode faster with GL-5 than with GL-4. Synchro corrosion is usually a bigger problem with manual transmissions than gear wear is, and Toyota says either GL-4 or GL-5 is acceptable. To reduce synchro corrosion problems, GL-4 is the better way to go. Redline MT-90 would be an excellent choice.

By the way, 1 US quart is 946 ml (0.946 l), so 2 US quarts is 1.892 litres.
