Always fun hanging upside while in a engine bay. LOL

Hopefully soon my car will also grace the Doc's garage for a full swap.

Well the tranny is great, but we found that the head gasket is bad after we finished the swap. So he's replacing that in the next couple days and heading back down to Florida.

not so cake work in an mr2...... the early year mr2's (like that one.... ie, pre 87) have a c50, not c52

and, uh, it's easier to reach the bolts if you get under the car - if you have to drop the tranny again, a tip for ya - leave the slave cylinder and shifter braket bolted to the transmission when you drop it - getting the slave cylinder and the bracket lined up in the car is a pita - takes much more time than bleeding the system

bah, you used a clutch alignment tool.... i always found a 3/8" breaker bar does the trick..... haven't had a problem using that method yet!

you should try that swap with an e51.... add another 50lbs to the tranny & 10+ lbs per axle.....

i'll try to get some pix of the last time i pulled the tranny from my 87.....

Yeah, we put a C52 in because it's a better tranny. The synchros on his C50 were pretty well shot in 2nd and 3rd.

Anyways I'm not sure what I was going for at that point, maybe the cables or something? Anyway, getting the slave cylinder aligned was a pain but it only took me like 5 minutes... which was long enough!

Also that alignment tool came in the kit so there was no reason not to use it. I think if I was doing it with the e51 then I would have used a jack, lifting the C50 up and aligning it by hand was pretty tiring as it was!

i have to use an engine hoist & some straps to get the tranny up.... then get under it and push it onto the motor....... i've done it like 3 times now, so i've gotten pretty good at it (as sad as that is)...

the first time i pulled the e51 (the brackets between the C series and E series ARE different, but i'm using C series with mine - for lack of finding the E series counterparts) i didn't pull the shifter cable bracket with it..... it took me 2 hours to line up the 2 bolts with the slave cylinder and the shifter cable bracket.... and that was having to use the air ratchet to tighten it...... such a pita

looks like you kept the 200mm clutch in there?

Ahm... I believe I ordered a clutch for an '86, so that would be a yes. Can you used the larger one (212mm?) in there?

So for example, I have this same exact clutch kit on order for my Celica ST, can I put the larger one in there? And what year/model car would it be for?

um.... not sure what size clutch came in the celica ST.... especially with a 6th gen that has a 7afe..... though, i can't see a 7afe using a 212mm and toyota having to redesign the 212mm clutch for a 6 bolt crank....... the clutch in my ae92 was my 4afe clutch (had like 8 months use on it) and all the pins line up perfectly to an ae86 8 bolt 200mm flywheel (which was on hand at the time).

What I meant was that the clutch kit for my '90 Celica is the same clutch kit for the '86 MR2, so if the 212mm clutch works on the '86 MR2, then it would work on the '90 Celica ST, no?

the clutch on a 200mm and 212mm isn't the same. If the celica uses a 212mm it will be the same as a 4ag 212mm clutch...... if it uses a 200mm it will be the same as a 4ag 200mm

So what were you asking about if I kept the old 200mm clutch in there or not? I think we have our lines crossed here.

The STOCK '86 MR2 clutch and the STOCK '90 Celica ST clutch are exactly the same. Now I asked if I can put the larger 212mm clutch into the MR2 and you said yes, right? So the question is, can I put the larger 212mm clutch into the '90 Celica ST as well?

    ok ok

no, that i know of you cannot..... the 90 ST came with a 4afe...... 6 bolt crank..... only way you could is if the 7afe later on came with a 6 bolt 212mm flywheel... then you could use a 212mm clutch kit

however, why? the 212mm is lighter, but has more outside rotating mass, and the heavier 200mm actually revs faster.... there are quite a few good 200mm kits out there as well, so the grab shouldn't be an issue....

Okay I gotcha, I thought you were saying that the 212mm would be better. Now, how would I use the 212mm clutch on a 4AGE? Would I need a different flywheel?

you would have to use a 212mm flywheel from an 88-92 4age
