    Mowgli "Moses": Aug, 23rd 1996 - Aug, 31st 2006

    Sadly my Rat Terrier Mowgli did not survive his snake bites from a Diamondback rattlesnake. He was bitten at least two times, if not three on his face. After his bite, he lived for three hours before he died of a heart attack. When he started going into cardiac arrest, they tried to save him. We laid him to rest in our backyard, with a service for him.

    I have to get this out, for my own sanity. It has been hard on the family, because for three years when we lived in Phoenix Mowgli was my Mom's ONLY friend. We got him sick at five weeks old, and my Mom nursed him back to health. He was given to my Dad as a "gift" to walk after his six artery bypass surgery. We've all been crying, balling our heads out and upset. Our house is so quiet, and lonely, without our dogs around. We hope to get our other dog Sparkle back, but it will be extremely hard on her because she loved Mowgli and she'll mourn for him as dogs do.

    Sparkle is at the veterinarian because she got bit as well. She was sitting on the snake when it bit her on her side, near her left shoulder. Mowgli jumped in to save her, and my Mom who was right behind Mowgli trying to get him and save him. He took most of the snake's venom. We had to kill the snake, to protect our family.

    Here is a video of my Mom playing a game she made up with Mowgli;

    And here he is, with a "cone" on his head, after having eye surgery earlier this year;

    Mowgli will be missed so much, and I'm glad he is in a better place and not suffering anymore. I hope to see him again some day. I'm crying for him, and the pain my Mother and Father have had to endure over his loss, as I post this.

    Sorry bro. Anybody who tells you, "Stop being sad, it's just a pet." ...punch them in the face. I remember I had my dog Leya for only 3 years, but when she died, man. ...pet's really are members of family, even if they can't talk.

    Most people, who don't have pets, don't realize that although they aren't human they are considered part of the family of even a family member. For my Mom, Mowgli was more then a dog she was close too, he was a son to her, and a brother to me in many ways.

    I've been having severe pain episodes, and my GI and neurologist think my health problems are due to Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) from my mononucleosis having damaged the nerves in my lower back. Through all of that, when I would lay on the couch during a pain episode, Mowgli was right there by my side. I'd lay my left hand down and he'd lay right under it so I could pet him and know he was there. Now, he's gone...

    It is so hard, and he'll never be forgotten or how he died. My Mom keeps thinking "he only lived for ten years, he should've lived longer." I agree with her, but then I realize that the ten years we had were full of love, fun and excitement with him in our lives. As a puppy, Mowgli destroyed a couch we had in Phoenix. We threw out the couch, but not the dog. :)

    Thank you all for your kind words and support. Our surviving dog, Sparkle, is back from the vet and is lethargic and sore from all of the drugs they put in her. I can understand how she feels, as I've been in the same situation myself. She is slowly moving around and when my Dad let her our earlier, she walked by Mowgli's grave. She keeps looking around for Mowgli, and is grieving for him.
