    more knock sensor questions...

Obviously, the KS is there to retard timing if knocking occurs. Is it a kind of "trial and error" sort of thing the ECU does? Does it continue to advanced timing until it hears knock and then backs it down some? IOW, the KS is the thing that allows most engines to take advantage of premium fuels because it can then advanced timing.

Does the 1ZZ do this? Will it actually advance timing with higher octane fuels or is it all a load of BS??

When the KS detects knocking, ignition timing is retarded from base setting. If no knock is recorded, timing remains at normal setting... Timing is not further advanced until knoking is present.

I think it might actually keep advancing it with the VVT-i untill it detects knocking and then back it off a little. That would be why it's nice to reset the ECU if you change octane ratings in your car
