Ok so ive been keeping it on the low but realistically can this be done? like is the drive shaft too long for the corolla chassis? I know the floor pan and/or gas tank might need to be relocated/ tampered with for it to be possible BUT my question is has this ever been done before? any PR guys? i know they do some crazy cool stuff but id want to see if its even worth thinking about.

I know most of you might say it will cost too much or be better to get something already AWD but with parts available whenever i need them id thought id take advantage of my uncles that came from mexico...

well, since we know what proper drive shafts to use for the c60 swap, i can imagine it wouldnt be to hard to find the ones for this. the drivers side alxe should be the same as the c6-, but my question is why keep it auto? i know it would be cheaper that this idea im about to say, but the 3sgte awd e series trand and a mwr adapter kit. not cheap but you would have a 5spd awd corolla. plus a bullet proof transmission. build and turbo the 1zz and rock out then. or swap in a mild built turbo 2zz and go rape.

are you talking about the caldina gt-four? because aren't those basically the matrix chassis?

perhaps maybe this swap but then again california sucks eggs when it comes to modding your car engine wise....which is why i want to stick to the 1zz AWD idea....the 2zz swap is lurking my mind but i would have to work with the stock exhaust manifold used from the corolla xrs because im guessing it will pass once it gets inspected since the 9th gen is almost the same....

but a 3s-gte awd corolla is beast....

Yeah, for a 3S to be legit here, you would need to find a USDM donor 3S-GTE that is the same age or newer than your chassis.

i just ment use the 3s transmission. MWR sells adapter kits for them mr2 trans into the 7th gen celica. but also for the 9th gen corolla and matrix.

    http://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/product_info.php?cPath=317&products_id=1502

no complex engine swaps and you get a bullet proof trans. not a cheap kit or path to take. but then again of fast, cheap and reliable you can only pick 2. mine will always be fast and reliable.

you would have to do some sort of engine mods as well. a dinky 140hp awd car is not going to be quick by any means. doing an awd swap will add about 300-400 lbs more to your cars empty curb weight. the other fact that the 1zz awd trans is auto, means it will struggle to get out of its own way.

i dont want to sound like im downing the idea, cus i think its excellent. but i know the car will need a lot more oomph than any basic mods can give to help it move under its own power.

ohhhh ok now i get you about the 3s tranny, i was getting all  as usual

Well i wasn't planing on leaving the 1zz stock to 140hp, just wanted input to see if its a doable thing or just out of mind...Because as i said before, im more into the rally scene and getting this body kit corolla with AWD would just be sick...

Looks like the matrix forums actually have another thread just like this one and the caldina 3s tranny is the closest bolt on to the 1zz as it was also an engine option for the caldina

That would be a truly unique swap, cBass. Do it.

Ive heard of a couple of guys in PR that have done it but I cant get in contact with them because my source (jdmprfreak) moved to Miami. If I do get a hold of anyone I'll try to get as many pics as possible with a VERY detailed parts list and labor. As Milky said, its totally do-able and sick as fuck when its done. If anything I'd follow Milky's advice for parts.

Good luck in California. Even if you keep it on the 1ZZ it'll pretty much instantly fail a visual test for the bi-annual smog check. (I have experience in that area) But if you can get it done that way you'll have to jump through hoops to get CARB to let you pass. Definitely wont be easy or cheap, but if you think the potential gains are worth the ridiculous headaches that will ensue, then by all means go for it.

The type of drivetrain should not affect passing carb crap. Being awd won't increase co2 or nox outputs. Very few things do actually. Carb is just overly strict for no reason. I have seen with my own two eyes, an aftermarket turbocharged car with no emissions equipment pass a stiffer test with flying colors. It's all in the tuning really. Air to fuel ratios and ignition timing has a direct influence on emissions on any car. Not the drive line type. As for visual inspection.. Idk. Do they lift the car up? Cus I doubt they would see the transfer case sitting behind the engine.. or the driveshaft or the rear diff and suspension.

Milky, the place ive been going for 6 years they use a stick that has a mirror on the bottom end and all they check is the Cat, thats about it....they dont lift the car up

Now if lets say i swap engines AND do the AWD conversion im guessing the inspector would see the mess from the AWD conversion and not pass it....Over at the 6thgen celica forums some guy butchered his rear floor and partial of his trunk to do the AWD conversion.

If i do plan on swapping for the AWD id rather do the engine swap first before messing with the floor for the AWD.

Irvin, by the looks of it the Matrix AWD only came in Auto but over at the Matrix forums they SAY (Its the internet) that they use the 3s tranny for the manual conversion and then they turbo

    Id want manual

just like i was saying. so its only a visual inspection.. good. some of the people on 6gc are not the brightest. lol. but it can be done. really anything is possible with enough time and money, well to certain extents. no bending the laws of physics or anything.

The visual inspection will make it obvious that it's a different engine, which will make them look hard is all I'm saying. And to do a street legal swap it has to pass every little detail with a state referee.
