Major Security Breech...just an FYI (Update)

If you’ve used your credit or debit card this holiday season at Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Home Goods or AG WRIGHT (online or at the store). You must be extra vigilant of your statements for unwanted charges. There was a major breech in the computer systems and hackers got thousands of card numbers and other info. Currently, those are the only companies I heard about on the news last night. At work today, they announced there may be more. Its not sure yet. We're currently working with Visa and MasterCard to determine how many card holders were affected and if there are more companies.
Just wanted to give people a heads up just in case. If there are more companies that are mentioned as the day goes on, I’ll update my post.

Just got an update on the exact stores.
    TJ Maxx
    Marshalls
    HomeGoods
    Bob's Stores
AJ Wright (Not AG Wright..i was going off my memory on that one)
    Winners and Homsense in Canada
    TK Maxx in Europe

Who cares... I've had fraudulant charges on my cards before and the credit card companys clear them up really quick. So if some nigerian prince steals my credit card from the marshals database to buy himself a new AK-47 I know I'm not actually paying for it :)

you might not care. but there is a time frame to dispute charges. And alot of people don't look at their statements. Not only that but ifpeople used their debit cards, thats money being taken from a checking account. So it can affect people in some way. So there are/will be people who care.

Sure.... I'm not one of them though :) Because I check my statements and my credit union treats Vista logo'd debit cards the same way and will put my money back if the charge is fraudulant. I suggest other people go with a secure mechanism like this also. And not checking your statements is just stupid :D

Do you check your statements every day?

Youd care when you or your wife went to pay for a shopping cart full of groceries and your card was denied. Yeah, youd get your money back, but the inconvenience factor would be pretty high.

That is why we have multiple cards, you always have a backup. And yes I do check my ballances every day though email alerts when a purchase is made. Sheesh.

man...two weeks ago i went to the bank to deposit a check and then i noticed that i ahev so little money on my account. i quickly went online and saw taht someone made some purchases on QVC. i called my bank and QVC and moticed taht there were 6 fraudulent charges made on my card. all up to a total of $1300. after two weeks i only got 400 refunded on my card. i called teh bank and they to give them a week to investigate. i also got invoices from UPS and FEDEX saying taht i have shipped stuff from utah to ny (and i live in MIA) all in total i owe those two comp 600 but my card was cancelled already by that time. which i don't understand why it was still charged on my name. need to call them too.
what a terrible month it has been for me.

Yeah, just hang in there - banks usually make this right, just let them do their investigation. I had the similar thing happen to me a few years ago. Drained my account during Thanksgiving Holiday - to the tune of over $8K (pretty smart on their part - as I could not get updated bank information during the holidays.)

Bank faxed over an Affidavit that I signed and had notorized - saying that I was not responsible for those charges. After about 4 days - they called me back and said that all monies would be returned to me - they discovered charges being placed for medical equipment, consumer electronics, and over $2K at a Wal*Mart of all places. Charges were all made at the same time all over the place - in the UK, Southern California, Boston, Utah, Vegas, etc.

Every single penny was returned except for any checks that I had written that bounced because funds were not available. You have to deal with a separate department to get that straighten out - I just ate the fees because of amount of time it was pulling from schedule. Still - at least the BIG chunk of money was returned. Sucky part of getting paid monthly - one big deposit.

Yup - That's what I did right after it happend to me. One of thoses things that people usually say, never could happen to them. Can't always go on how careful you are - you also have to think about how many others got their hands in your personal information (bank, work, clearances, etc.). Now I got mine spread out to several banks and in different states (states where family lives so they can check on things for me). Makes security investigations and background checks for higher clearance levels a joy :D -

Air Force investigator, "How many bank accounts do you have? Why?" - Me, "Why not, don't like to keep all my eggs in one basket". Investigator gives me a funny look and then proceeds to make sure someone finds out where I spend all my money.
