For 400 you won't get much unless you want just so-so stuff. A good Alpine head unit alone will be about 400. I say just get a nice head unit for now and save up and get speakers later. You don't want to skimp on this. You can really hear the difference. When I got my Alpine unit I got the last years highest model for 400 installed.

ok , i got a sony drive s head unit , puts out damn good quality and sound , and will play any cd i throw at it , while driving on ruff ass FL. roads , and dont skip. its a limited edition though. other than that cheap ass , but sound half decent lightning audio (Rockford fosgate) 5 1/2" 3-ways in the back , and 4" 2-ways up front . stay away from DUAL and jenson.
heres my radio , these were only produced in the brushed alum. , and blue back lit for a 1/4 of the year they were produced , a very hard to find item to cmplete the look of my interior that still isnt complete.

Yeah, I'd say just buy a decent HU.:) Then save-up for quality speakers.

My dream speaker set-up would be all out Focal!!!

Its all up to your preference but I would prefer all Diamonds. The Diamond Hexes are crazy nice. I want the new Clarion or Alpine fully integrated iPod head unit.

    thanks for the input

what im really looking for in speakers is good - very good sound quality and something that'll pump out some decent bass when i turn the music up. what i really want is something that wont make the sound crack and become distorted when the volume is turned up.

quick question, what size speakers can i fit into the front and rear of my corolla?

Those are pretty big already. Try to get 3 way speakers if you can. Its a world of difference.

I'm in the process of putting in an Alpine 9827 into my car, just need to pick up some solder and heat shrink for the harness. Not sure what to do for speakers but I have two new 10" pioneer premiers and nice JL 500W amp that I got for $230 total. Still need to make an MDF box for them. Not sure what I'll do for interior, prolly call up my buddy and see what kind of deal he can get me. I have an extra 9807 unit, but I don't think I could part with it, they were only $300 new but I think they've held their value nicely.

Anyone know if they make a solid external antenna that fits in the stock location (the wire one by the drivers door), asthetically that thing is fugly.

6.5 in back easy do dont waste time with 6.75s 6.5s fit right into the black plastic thing in the rear deck for the front though another story

this is what i had to make to get my pioneer 6.5s to fit in front
    [IMG]
now if u get a shallow for the front u may not run into this problem but i had to

    my setup is
    alpine cda 9807
    alpine spr-13s front
    alpine spr-17s rear
    phoenix gold octane-r 5ch 900w
    RE SE 12" single sub

i saved about $100 on the front AND rear alpine type r's and i forgot how much i saved on every other component. for example, the sub i bought brand new from a dealer that frequents caraudioforum.com.

    RE subs are phenominal.
