Just received my FilterMag SS250

Well, it came in the mail, free shipping from the ebay seller. I've always heard good things about these. I decided to give it a try. It's reusable too so I can move it to my other car in the future.

dude, if you have enough metal shavings running through your oiling system for this thing to even function than you have more pressing matters to attend to... like an engine rebuild.

There will always be metal particulates in the oil that the filter can't catch. Sure, they're small enough that they won't hurt the motor in the short term so you don't notice anything, but later, the damage builds up.

metal in your oil means one, or both, of two things...

#1. you just got done breaking in your engine, change the oil and youre good to go.

#2. your main/rod bearings are on there way out... time to rebuild.

Well, the purpose of it trapping metal fragments is to extend oil change intervals.

I believe you'd still need to keep the same oil change interval because a magnet wouldn't prevent the chemical break down of lubericating polymer chains in the oil which is cause by heat.

Unless you're using a synthetic oil made exactly for long change intervals. I'm running Royal Purple.

that has nothing to do with why you have enough metal shavings in your oil that you need a 75lb magnet to pull them away from the filter material inside the filter. i use royal purple on all of my cars and still follow the suggested service intervals.

your engine will soon be toast if youre actually producing enough metal shavings for this device to actually start catching anything.

its a gag and a gimmick to make money off of people who dont know exactly how things work and will buy any and every accessory for their vehicle.

a smarter thing to do is to get a magnetic oil plug. that will capture any metal shavings and warn you during your normal service intervals if you have any engine damage or undue wear. i dont suppose you cut open your oil filters and do a thorough inspection... do you?

I'm not saying that there will always be large quantities of metal shavings, but there will always be particles in the oil. The magnet just helps trap the extra small pieces, however few of them there are.

why don't you do a normal oil interval and get the oil tested and then get it tested after using the magnet? this would help tell if the magnet does anything at all. a magnet will not stop oil from breaking down during use.

That's true, but Royal Purple is good up to 12,000 miles. I wouldn't stretch it that far though just to be safe.

I'm with Rollatuner. If I can buy a device that attracts and holds particles that would otherwise pass right through the filter medium and circulate through the engine, I'm on it. I am about to buy one for my 2008 Prius. When you do an oil change, you do not change 100% of the oil. This would give reason to trap as many particles as you can in the filter. The device is inexpensive as well. I also agree that a magnetic drain plug should be used as well. Just my 2 cents.
