is this possible?

i'm replacing my stock shift knob (automatic) with a shift knob & boot and i was wondering if there is a way to create/duplicate the "gear indicator" (the thing next the the shifter on the base that shows what gear your'e in) in another location? i was thinking maybe you could wire some led's to the ECU or something and they'd light up to show what gear you're in...or maybe some other way....just wondering

Iv already had a big thread about this before. Anything is possible, but its hardly worth it for the work youd go through. And like someone made a point to me, why do you need to know what gear your in, if your a good driver you should always know what gear your in by speed and noise of engine. (Im not being mean, im just saying what someone said to me once). Yeah i thought it would be cool to do, but the work to do it is not worth it.

That would be sweet if you could figure out how to do it. I'm gonna have to disagree that you can't always tell what gear youre in. You start you're car and move the shifter, whats the difference gonna be between reverse and drive until you let off the brake and go in a direction you didnt want to?

i'm more worried about accidentally going into reverse or neutral...i can tell the difference between L, 2 and D....i'll figure it out though

Are you talking about drving.
Cause if thats the case no worries. If you accidently go into netural all you do is put it back in gear, putting in reverse is impossiable unless you have the button pushed

no i'm not worried about driving...i can do auto-shift while driving with no problem...it's not a big deal i suppose...i guess i'm just worrying for no reason 'cause now that i think about it i rarely look at what gear i'm in

my point exactly...i don't wanna think i'm in reverse and end up going forward or vice-versa...and i definitely don't wanna accidentally go in neutral at the wrong time...i think i may have a way to do it...i'll keep everybody updated and let you know how it turns out

All you have to do is count

it's basically the same w/98's (L instead of 1)....but when your downsifting it doesn't click or anything so unless you go from park to reverse, then to neutral then to drive then it's not so simple

well if you go by clicks, you gotta do it kinda slow haha

I dont even count anymore, its second nature for me, and with the way my shifter is set up it has to be.

But you can feel the shifter move no matter how fast you go.

i can do it without looking. for N or R just start in P and slowly click down. for D,2, or 1 just shift all the way down and slowly move up. its easy as long as you remember the pattern.

Spend time in your without the motor running and pratice.

nope...i think that was on the 93-97...i've got a 98

i've thought about it plenty of times, but a) i can't find a junkyard around here that has my gen corolla and 2)for all that money i'd pay for swapping i could just trade my car in and get a much faster 5-speed...IMO it would look alot better than the stock shifter...and that's what matters the most

Yea the 01-02 does not have a indicator on the dash

its just a lack of attention to not know what gear youre in.... a shame really..... its my opinion that if youre not aware of the gear youre in, or actually have to second guess yourself about being in drive or reverse..... you should go back to a highschool drivers ed class, because you just arent fit to be operating a vehicle

I'm very used to knowing what gear I'm in because I've had the auto shift indicator covered up so longl. Another main advantage I could think of by having a indicator would be in case anyone else has to drive your car.

Step 1: Buy a junked Corolla.

Step 2: Take the clutch pedal, manual transmission, flywheel, et cetera...

Step 3: Swap them in your car.

Voila! No need for gear indicator! Otherwise, I think adding a shift boot and knob would be detrimental to your car. Why do anything that makes your car harder to drive? Is having a shift boot that important? A kid I used to hang out with had your idea, and then he decided to keep it as is, but opened up the indicator in the center console, and changed the backlighting bulb to a red one. Much safer.

Thats my ultimate plan, but for now I am sticking with my non-OEM shift knob, cause I am 6'1" and if I keep the stock shifter with the way I drive and sit in the car, right knee will have a permant indent from it.

I have had other people drive my car and they know what gear is what with no problems and noone asking what gear is what
