    is there such a thing as over-clearcoating?

    Can you use too much clearcoat when covering your base coat?

    hehe no...

    well yes and no...

    a lot of clear coat = possibility to polish the hell out of it

    With being able to polish you can do some really nice things with a paint job... a lot of clearcoat + a nice pearled basecoat + a superior polish job = badass candied lookin paintjob.

    Well you are going to need to strip the car done to the metal. Fill in at the chips, sand over again. Apply a good primer coat. About 3 coats of high quality paint and usually 2 or 3 coats of clear. I have never heard of doing more than that.

    most people will charge you less to repaint it the same color you have on it now, around $2000 - maybe a little less, but if you are changing the paint to a whole new color, to get a really good job done it might run as high as $3000 or more. make sure you ask if they will do a wet sand and buff when they are finished, it should be included in the whole price, but some places don't, but it makes the difference between the reflection looking kind of bumpy, like an orange, or being clear like a mirror.

    The most I've seen is the following:

    Stripped
    Filled and Flattened (cleaned up bodylines, etc)
    Primed (thick ass primer)
    Resanded (block sanding)
    Glazed (SMALL spots that needed filling that showed up after sanding)
    RePrimed (yep indeed so)
    Resanded (blocked once more to smooth it out)
    Cleaned
    Tacked
    Sealed
    2 Layers of Base Coat
    2 Layers of Clear Coat
    1 Layer of Pearl Ghost Flames
    2 Layers of Clear Coat
    Sanded with 1200 grit
    Polished

    Now *THAT* was a paint job.

    Granted if you were not going to go with some pearl flames, hehe you'd just put on 2-3 coats of clear and sand down to polish from there.

    When I paint a car I charge about $4,000 and up . Because it's bitch to paint a full car a different color and the shop I work at we sand the whole car by hand!!
