is there any way to get 17's with 205 45 17 tires to fit in the wheel well safely for the 98-01 corolla? if so, what modifications would be necessary?

Did you mean a 205/45-16 or 205/40-17 - a 205/45-17 is too tall, will throw off your speedo. Anycase, they should fit - you may have to roll the fender lip and trim the mudflap (if applicable), especially if you have any drop at all, to keep the tires from rubbing. Have to check the backspacing and width of the tires themselves - as some tires are much wider than others of the same size. If your wheel offset is around 38mm (pretty common) - you will have to roll the lip. If it is something like 45mm - you may not have to with stock suspension. Acceptable range of offsets are 38mm-45mm for 8th generation Corollas, but some have gotten away with 47mm offsets (almost touches the strut).

hmmm interesting so I'm guessing that 18's would not clear the fender right?

18 wheel should fit, barely - depends on the rest of the car (suspension, bodykit, etc.) - but personally, that is too much wheel for a Corolla. Just the price of tires and decent wheels will be enough of a deterent to most Corolla owners. To get the right tire diameter would me a 215/35-18. Basically just a strip of rubber on a wheel.

On my Corolla (205/45-16 wheel) - rolled fender lip, standard S body, 1.25" drop - the top edge of the rear tires are just barely tucked under the fender lip. Get a couple of "heavy duty" sized buddies to sit in the back and the top of the tire touches the wheel well.

18s with rubber isnt that much more money than 16s with rubber....being a corolla owner doesnt have anything to do with it.

ok. i have 205 45 16's now, i want 205 45 17s, but i dont want to buy if they wont tuck correctly. when i used to have 17s, i ran 205 40 17's but i didn't feel like i had enough tire. so i will get some 17's with 205 45 17's if they will fit but i dont want to lose the tire. i have no drop but i have a bomex rear and r33 front.

btw, there are like 5 corolla owners with a 98-01 corolla that have 18's with 35 series tires.

All fitment on wheels on the 98-02 (not sure on 94-97) depends on offset. Every single wheel that is not 45+ or 47+ offset will rub. Is the thickness of the lip from hell in the back wheel well that will own you. 03+ do not have this problem since their lip is so thin. 205/45/17 with even a right offset will rub as well since you are adding more tire to the profile. I think 205/40/17 will look good without it looking like the tire is too small.

Anyway if you have not done so you can read this:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/plusone.jsp

Very good article that explains the process of up sizing.

Ah you mean on the upper perch of the strut? that is interesting. so it must have been rubbing all the time since the strut moves with the tire. Did you verify that?

wit stock suspension it will rub no matter what, the stock springs are so bouncy..maybe get some eibachs or at least summin stiffer than stock that way u dun have to worry bout the rubbing. i have tein s. techs and the rear use to rub like crazy but now i put spring spacers and that corrected the problem

even with a 10MM spacer, the tire still contacts the strut hat in the rear. never made it to the front of the car. i was trying to borrow my roommate's 15's for an autoX race (my old MR2 wheels hehe) but i couldn't get the 17's off my car fit, so i gave up..

oh, and FYI this was on a 96 but the struts are identical for 93-02 so i would assume this applies to 98-02

it rubbed on my car, but i think it really depends on the offfest of rims.

i have to rolled my fender to avoid the rubbing.(with camber not corrected)
