    is a header worth it?

i was just wondering if there is any significant performance gain if i were to install a header, i know the engine will breathe better but is it worth it?

Depends..if you're willing to spend $180 on an intake (ie don't mind paying a decent amount of money for small gains), then yeah. If you plan on turbocharging later, then don't bother.

If that and a catback are all you have done to the car then don't expect a mind blowing change in performance. I don't have a header, but from what I've heard about what others have said, it's a subtle improvement. With my catback it actually feels like I lost more in the way of midrange torque than I gained in highend HP. Anyone feel similarly?

you'll feel a little improvement- i didnt notice a whole lot- insync w/ a catback- and you'll get much better results- but dont expect much-

pros: unlock those couple of horses, high end power, sweet harmonic humming sound (at least thats what mine sounds like)

Cons: loose low end torque, heat (IMMENSE heat, which is situated right next to the alternator and stuff), painfull installation

i think the cons outweigh the pros- BUT if youve got the cash and you dont know what else to do with it? go ahead!

you had to buy a new gasket? i read on a DIY page that the stock gasket was reuseable, idk im probably just going to end up having a shop install mine

oh yeah! you better buy everything new- you dont wanna mess w/ old gaskets...especially for the exhaust ports wehre the header connects to the block; but most aftermarket systems come w/ their own gaskets (like mine did) besides- you cant reuse an old gasket that fit your old exhaust system, but not your new one...

my friend has an acura cl 2.2 lr, our cars are equal in power, literally equal (excellent reference car) anyway he installed a header, and a muffler, and it did nothing for him, not even a half a carlength. idk beats me?

Muffler, or a catback? I can definitely tell a difference in my car's performance with a catback, but it's just a question of where it comes into play most.

In a way I don't think a lot of car mods are "worth it." But I think I gained some high end power by adding a header and a high flow cat. I did both at the same time so I couldn't specify just the header. Honestly though if you were to gain 2-3hp from a header, do you think you could really feel it?

If you do decide to get a header I have one for sale. $50 shipped, it has a leak in the flex pipe but I think a exhaust shop should be able to fix it for way less than buying a whole header.

well, you're not spraying whereever you go, so i dont think nitrous would be a very smart setup if it's just a daily beater with a little bit of umph..

    Flex Pipe??

You can reuse the header gasket, its a metal one, and is ok for reuse unless it is physically broken. When it heats up w/ the engine, it expands at a rate quicker than the engine, and makes its seal then. Your intake header is the same way.

I seriously think you could ceramic coat a stock header(or basically paint it w/ high temp paint about 10 coats over-ghetto style) and get the same gains.
This is of course for a 1zz 98-02. The header runs are so damn short, to make an effective header, youd have to have it attach straight to the cat via that flange/coupler. I dunno about how much room is between the eng. and firewall in the 03+.

I do know that the pre98's can get a nice 4-2-1 header in there- get a 4age intake, catback, and a CAI- make sure to do a ass/seat dyno before and after and I'm sure you'll get about 5-7hp out of a 7afe.

Of course if you want real power and not hollow noise use n2o, turbo or s/c...
