intercooler not needed for some turbo?

I was talking to one of my classmates who have a presentation on Drifting about turbo. He told me that for my Corolla, the Garrett T25 doesn't even require an intercooler. Ultimately, it save me money on piping and having to buy an intercooler.

What do you guys make of it?

intercooler isnt even really needed. i just gives you more power at the cost of turbo lag.

An intercooler isn't needed, but , it helps. I have a t-25, but I also run an intercooler. when the air comes off that turbine, it is hot because compressed air is hot, not to mention the compressor is right next to the exhaust, so heat transfer is there, and also when the air is hotter, there is more chance for detonation ( why do you think n20 is cold? ) I would say if you are going to run without an intercooler, run minimum boost, and high octane fuel. Running with no intercooler isn't the end of the world just be carefull, and listen for detonation when you turn the boost up.

Cold dense air provides more power..and an intercooler cools the air going into the engine.

You can run a non-intercooled turbo, but don't run high boost..

i guess it is worth the extra turbo lag since all the top tuners use them.

you don't need an intercooler with any turbo set up............you don't need a parachute to jump out of a plane either.....but it helps.

Hmmm, hey System Error, what does an underdrive pulley do.(reading your mod list)

    you're my hero... lol

that's the most awesome quote ...

it's true you don't have to have one... but you'll have some serious issues with heat soak as well as loss of power since the air is gonna be pretty damn hot. :)

as for the lag - never seen it happen because of an intercooler - unless the setup was all botched from the beginning.
if a system is engineered properly (read: not some shitbox $800 civic kit) you shouldn't notice a difference between having one and not as far as spool time.

They're lighter, so the engine doesn't have to do as much work to turn them............ they help reduce drivetrain power loss.

unless you get the turbo mounted in the back by the rear axle...

Now that I've finally stopped laughing... Reduced weight only accounts for a very small fraction of the overall reduction in parasitic drag on the engine. An underdrive pulley is exactly what it says: a pulley that underdrives the ancillaries on the engine (alternator, water pump, PAS pump, A/C compressor). The savings come in that the torque needed to turn them is reduced, at the expense of the speed of the accessories, which can have an adverse effect on some of the functions... the already marginal charging system's performance at idle is further hampered, the water pump is turning slower, thus reducing cooling system function (not good for warm-up), and A/C effectiveness is further reduced at idle... Just a couple of things to think about.
