Forced Induction Installing Greedy Oil Catch Can Tips

    I had to remount my catch can so it won't be in the way of my intercooler piping, so I decided to make a quick tips write up for installing one.

    An oil catch can is great at keeping vaporized oil containted in the blowby coming out of the PCV valve from sluding up your throttlebody and intake manifold, as well as lowering your octane rating.

    Installing a catch can is very simple. Find a good location in engine bay that you can stand it up. I used the area where I battery used to be. I bent the universal bracket that came with it into an L and bolted it through a hole where the battery tray used to rest.

    Greddy may or may not supply you with enough hose depending on where you mount the catch can. If this is not the case, you can get 3/8" clear hose from Home Depot or Lowes.

    The Greddy catch can, much like most catch cans on the market, isn't baffled. This means that oil filled gasses flow into the catch can and right back out into your intake system. You need to add some sort of way to make the the gas condense so that the oil stays in the catch can. This can be done by stuffing the can with some medium to coarse steel wool. I went a step further and added a short piece of 3/8" pipe on the catch can's inlet hose so that the gas goes under the steel wool. This way, it has to pass through it to get to the outlet.

    Once you've baffled and mounted your catch can, all that's left it to run hoses to it. Unplug the stock hose that runs from the PCV valve (towards the rear right of the engine) to the throttle body. Plug your new hose from the PCV valve to the catch can inlet that has the added pipe. Run another line from the outlet back to the throttlebody.

    If you've done the Celica GT intake manifold swap like I did, you'll find that the hose going from the catch cans outlet to the throttle body is too small. To fix this, get a 5 to 6" piece of 3/4" hose and a brass fitting that has a 3/8" nipple on one end and 3/4" one on the other.

    Many people say you can just stick a breather on the catch can instead of venting it back to the throttle body. The problem with this is that there is no more vacuum from the intake system to vlean the crank case by scavenge the gases out of the PCV valve.

    What about connecting the other hose to the other side of the cam cover where the injectors are, that hose that also runs to TB, like when you installed a ‘breather’ there a few years ago?
    I don’t know if this other opening also has positive air flow like PCV valve does, then it won‘t work.

    You want to keep that on a seperate oil catch can if you want to hook that up.
