Installed new intake and a engine knocking sound started??

When i installed my weapon-r secret intake sometime right after when the engine warms up and its in idle, it sounds like the cylinders are knocking.

I got a 2000 rolla, idk if this is normal, but i think i'm gonna have to spend another hour putting the stock airbox on and take it back to the dealer station to make them check it out before my warranty runs out.

Did anyone had these type of problems after installing the intake?

i don;t think its your engine is knocking, but the only way it'll knock is if u keep pushing it to the redline and how the way u drive.. Then thats how u mass up your motor....

knocking sound? hm... i dont think its your cylinders man.
the air intake makes only a "hissss" sound. did you plug all the sensors in?

there's only one censor to plug in, it doesn't hiss it humes. Its only a short air intake. But something is knocking and i put a screw driver up to the engine block and the screw driver was vibrating a bit. But i would think the check engine light would go on but it didn't. I'm kinda worried bout it.

    Its on a 2000 rolla

    <br />
are you sure the piping isnt hitting something?

Yeah, any engine will vibrate a bit (courtesty of the hundreds to thousands of mini-explosions happening within the engine walls every minute). Like 91DX said, make sure everything is tight, that nothing is lose or hitting against anything else. If that doesn't work, try putting on your stock air box and see if the sound still happens.

aahhh, i think i know- is it like a tinging, pinging sound, usually when heavy throttle is applied? b/c that happened to me when my intake fell off and i was driving for a while- a quick cleaning of the throttle body, use of seafoam, helped out a bunch, dont know if thatll work for ya, it could also be an issue with just resetting the ECU by just unhooking the battery for like 15mintues, that may fix it..not entirely sure... it also may go away over time- in any case- dont give up yet... on 00's there's a lot more sensors taht im unfamilair with, so def try resettin the ECU..

I would suspect it was engine knock from a lean mixture since the AEM intake caused my 03 Corolla's engine to knock, but that was only @ 1/2 to full throttle and only between 1800-2800 rpms. I really doubt you'd be running lean at idle.

Check the vacuum switching valve - it ticks like crazy and sounds like engine knock sometimes.

I don't hear it on higher rpms but its still probably there, but at idle its pretty hard. My friend said he had the sme problem with his old isuzu trooper when his cylinder was knocking.

It only happens when the engine is warmed up and the RPM drops to its idle around 800 or so. THen i can hear it very well

Also - keep in mind. Stock intake is designed to keep things quiet. Aftermarket intakes amplify lots of noises that you normally would never hear. That includes things like valve noise and fuel injectors (they are pretty darn loud on the 1ZZ engines).

Does the engine still run the same in terms of power? Does it knock when cold, when hot - all the time?

People are so paranoid about redlining their engine. It's not good, I agree, but it's not as bad as some people think. I do all the time on my 2003 and still do after 50,000 miles of trouble free driving. And I still have 200psi compression on all four cylinders - translation: rings and valves are still in good shape. Still have good oil pressure - bearings are fine.

Are you talking about the tube?
Cuase there is a sensor i had to put in and screw in. Then i had to connect a tube to something else and thast my other sensor then i think...

The sensor that is held in place by 2 screws and has the 5-wire electrical connector going to it is the mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor). These things are touchy and are probably the biggest factor in the mixture you are running. They tell the ECU how much air is coming into the engine so the ECU can decide how much fuel to inject. They don't like a lot of intake noise and they wig out with turbulent airflow b/c they don't get an accurate reading and tell the computer that X amount of air is coming into the engine, when actually it's more (that's the purpose of the plastic mesh on the stock airbox - to straighten the air stream). The ECU injects X amount of fuel, but should inject more to create a good mixture. However, idling doesn't create turbulence even without the mesh, so I can't see it being engine knock from a lean mixture.

The hose is the EVAP breather. It sucks filtered fresh air into the gas tank to equalize vapor. This wouldn't be a problem unless you have the hoses connected backwards. Check that the upper valve with the little green EVAP presure port on the line is connected to the intake manifold and the other (lower one) is connected to the intake pipe. Having them backwards could definitely cause the knocking noise you're hearing.
