    infinity 6x9 2-ways....Xover question....

I'm running a Pioneer DEH-P2000 HU, Jensen 400W 4-ch amp and Infinity Kappa 2-way speakers front and rear. The Kappas are super, but I've noticed that my sound-staging isn't quite right. I know I SHOULD have gotten components up front, but too late for that, huh? So, since my sound staging isn't right, could I simply disconnect the tweeters on the rear 6x9's?? Would that damage the Xover or the speakers? Those tweeters on the rear speakers are just running the whole show - like that's ALL you hear are the rear speakers. Could I just disconnect the rear tweets and be ok?? What yall think?? Good or bad idea?

    Any comments are welcome,
    Trav

Disconnecting the tweeters won't hurt anything. It's worth a try. What about reducing the amplifier gain for the rear speakers? Also, if you find the high frequecies objectionable, maybe your sub gain needs to increase.

I don't have a sub. I can't mess with the gain, either. Gain is for matching the amp input with the output of the HU, which is 2.2V. I could crank up the bass boost, but again, I think this might be how I've fried 3 out of 4 speakers. Just recieved the replacement for that 6x9 I fried (3 year warranties are NICE). Still waiting on the front two speakers...

    Thanks,

Why can't you mess with the gain? No gain control?

Kappas will never sound great without a sub. They have a great high frequency response but not much at the low end. They don't adhere to the "500" rule of audio.

Take the low end cutoff frequncy in Hz of your system and the high end cutoff frequqncy in kHz, and multiply them. The closer to 500 the result is, the more balanced the sound will be.

If you compare a system with a response of 50Hz-20kHz and one from 50Hz-10kHz, the second system will sound better (product is 500 vs. 1000 for the first). Most people would say by looking at the number that the first system would sound better.

The Kappas have a stong high end response, but are weak in the low end. Adding a sub will help to balance the sound.

I COULD crank the gain up to get more volume, but then I'd be back to square 1 with 3 (or more) dead speakers. High volume doesn't hurt speakers, it's the distortion that kills them and cranking the gain up is a sure way to get lots of distortion. The output of my head unit is 2.2V (according to the user manual and my voltmeter), therefore I can set the gain @ around 2V and setting it higher is running a big risk that I'm not willing to take.

The 6.5" Kappas have mediocre bass response - agreed. The rear 6x9" Kappas can REALLY pound the bass out. Those speakers are rated like 10-110W RMS and 330W MAX and they can rattle the teeth outta your head if you want them to. However, with the tweets going, it's enough to make your ears bleed and that's what I'm trying to get away from. The front tweets on the 6.5's are enough.

What I'm suggesting is to turn the gain down to the rear speakers.

I also have 6 by 9 Kappas in the back and trust me, they are weak in the low end. A sub will make a huge difference.
