I'm back, with more questions to boot!

Phew, what a search! My 98 Corolla is still chugging along with the burnt valves, but thankfully I've also found a wrecking yard with a 1ZZ from the Matrix Xr. The 1ZZ from the Matrix Xr are the same as the 00 Corollas, by the fact they're equipped with VVT, right?

I was just curious about that and if using the 1ZZ from the Matrix would be alright in my Corolla. I understand the 2ZZ wouldn't be that bad since it's FF to FF but would there be any complications from 4wd to FF? I wouldn't think so...but, you never know. Any comments or answers to any of my question? Anything is helpful, and thank you for your time.

Yes you could use the 1ZZ from the Matrix. The wiring is different. If you mean you're taking a 1ZZ from a 4wd Matrix, no, there won't be a problem. Also the 2ZZ takes a bit of work but is doable.

So, I'd need the wiring harness and ECU from the Matrix to make it compatible with my Corolla? Would there be any issues if the engine originally came from an automatic? My Corolla is already a 5 speed manual so... *shrugs* Thanks again for all the help and information!

What I would do if I were you is get JUST the engine from the Matrix, and use both of the manifolds and all the sensors from your car. Then you don't have to mess with any wiring at all.

Well from what it seems like I'm getting is JUST the engine. But the engine will have VVT, right? Is there anything I'd need to make up for the lack of VVT in my little 98 Corolla? But just using all the manifolds and stuff like that I could keep with my old wiring harness, which is a good thing to know. :)

You won't have VVTi if you use your old harness and ECU. You could probably run some wires from the plug to the ECU and use a newer ECU and get it to work... you'll also need a MAF as the '98 is MAP sensored.

Ok, so I'll need a newer ECU from 00+ Celica GT/Corolla/Matrix XR, right? And a MAF sensor? What's that? Is it like a fuel/air mixture sensor? Emissions sensor? *is kind of newbie about all of this* So, I'll need the engine, ECU, MAF Sensor and mod the wiring harness a little or a new one also?

The MAF measures the air going into the engine, it sits in the intake. To be honest, that's a lot of work for very little return (5hp?). If you're going to go through all of that, then you may as well get a 2ZZGE and go all the way.

I'd like to snag a 2ZZGE into my little Corolla but it's going to be tough to find the engine and all the parts. And probably not in the least bit cheap, am I not correct? I mean, I understand that I'll only gain roughly 5 horses, but on the flip side I also have burnt valves. And we're just trying to find a way to get around the 2000 dollar fix for 2 burnt valves. Kinda crazy, isn't it? If I can score all the parts I need to do the 2ZZGE swap for under 2.5~3k-ish then I'm all for it. But my biggest limiter is the price.

Thanks again for all the information. I really appreciate all the input you've brought in for this.
